In my mini-sketchbook "Tales of the Aeriesh" (griffons in Equestria or being Irish), Andy Price, one of the artists for IDW's MLP comics, came up with this fellow.

The similarities between the words "aerie" and "Éire" (Ireland) aside, I feel the perceived personalities of the Irish fit griffons very well. Blending that with elements from Ancient Greek (for popularization), Central Asia (for origins), and feudal Europe (for heraldry) avoids making the results wholly stereotypical.
