A scraggy boy, sat on the bandstand and plinked out a single note from the keyboard sitting on his lap. Reaching to his side Addy Housutapas scribbled something down on a sheet of paper laying there. The little pants lizard then proceeded to repeat the action. The empty music room providing an excellent echo chamber for the disjointed, piece-by-piece music since classes were out for the day at the Pokemon Combat Academy and he wasn’t likely to be bothered as he worked.
After a few minutes of this the freshmen leaned his head back and let out a groan of frustration. He'd learned to play music, and the keyboard, by ear and repeated practice. As a little kid he'd heard music he liked and, after the effort to climb up onto the bench so he could reach it, he'd tried to recreate it using his family’s keyboard. Eventually through repetition he learned which key made what sound and could play almost any piece of music he heard from memory. He had a GOOD memory for music. He could even create his own pieces if he was feeling up for it. What he COULDN'T do was actually READ sheet music or tell you what the different little note marks meant or were called. He'd never had a proper music lesson till he'd come to the PCA…
This made learning it much harder for him. Trying to transcribe one of the songs he'd created, "Homework" his tutor had given him, was a long and frustrating task when simply playing it from memory came so easily to him. He sighed as he looked at his scribbled music sheet and hung his head at how long it’d take him to finish. To be fair, it wasn't like this was the biggest change in his life since he'd come to the PCA… it was just the most frustrating.
Addy had never really had friends back home, but that was to be expected with the family "tradition". He didn't know when the tradition had started but the Housutapas family was expected to be punks, thugs, and trouble makers during their school years before straightening out come graduation. His older brother had done it and all three of his older sisters had done it… but Addy had utterly failed at it. If it hadn't been for the twin's reputation at his old grade school he'd probably have been bullied mercilessly instead of bullying whether he'd been successful in the school's battling program or not.
He'd tried to make up for lost time when he'd come to the PCA by attempting to push around the only kids he thought he could… and he still felt sore from what Sammi had done to him. He'd even ended up making friends with some of Team Pre-K in the process (though he still couldn't figure out why they kept that name). And then there were his dorm mates… straight-laced and duty obsessed Mio and Gabriel the crybaby. If you'd told Addy back when he first arrived that he'd end up making friends with those two he'd have called you a liar (partially cause he had never actually had friends his age before). Yet if he wasn't busy with homework, battle practice, being tutored, or anything else he found himself hanging out with his dorm mates. Though in Gabriel's case it might be closer to baby-sitting with how sensitive the zorua was…
As for Mio… the oshawott got together with him and Andrew, the pichu leader of Team Pre-K, on the weekends (and sometimes during the week if they got lucky) to practice together. They'd formed a band, named Little Band… at least until they came up with a better title, for no real reason other than they all happened to have an instrument (Andrew on guitar, Mio on ocarina, and Addy on keyboard of course) and they happened to like playing. They'd even done a few performances when a local nightclubs held a talent night (though Addy had had to get some help from Andrew's teddiursa teammate setting the stuff up, turned out Petie was okay with sound equipment and other tech) to… mixed results. The scraggy wasn't sure if the applause had been because they liked the music or if the crowds had thought they were an adorable novelty act…
Yeah… a LOT of stuff had changed since he'd gotten to the PCA, most of it for the better. With a groan Addy set his sheet music aside and stretched his arms. Changed or not it was time for a little return to old habits before this drove him nuts. Laying his fingers on the keys the scraggy closed his eyes and took a deep, calming breath before exhaling. Mentally shuffling through the collection of music in his head for what he wanted to play before deciding to just make up a new piece to suit the occasion. Something soft… he didn't know enough of the technical terms to describe it (words didn't really do music justice in his opinion anyway) but somewhere between a lullaby and a waltz with a soft, relaxing, flowing melody.
Nodding approvingly at his song "choice" Addy finally opened his eyes and let his fingers dance across the keys. One note to the next to the next and so on, what sounds "Right" for the song to sound like. Soon the empty music room echoed the composition that Addy was playing, smiling broadly as he didn't have a care in the world. He was a little kid again just happily plugging away at the piano and enjoying the sound it made… with the key difference being he was actually making music this time. So wrapped up in it the scraggy had no idea how long he'd been playing his melody when a voice, soft and sweet enough he might have lost it in the music if he didn't have better hearing, spoke up and snapped him out of his trance.
"U-um… may I please come in?"
Addy's finger's danced across the keyboard for a moment more, winding the melody down some, on reflex and respect for the music than any conscious choice as he looked up to see who'd asked that. The scraggy's cheeks promptly flushed pink as he felt his jaw go a little slack. Standing in the doorway was a helioptile girl of a modest but feminine build and figure. Her eyes were large and an innocent blue color… which stood out in contrast to the snowy white clothes she was wearing. A sleeveless white sundress that stopped a bit above her ankles, a matching, broad, sunhat with a blue bow tied on the brim, and a white parasol in her hands, held in front of her in a shy and timid pose. The outfit was only slightly frilled and ornamented but that somehow seemed to make it look more out of place… like the girl had stepped out of some old period piece novel and was on her way back to an old mansion somewhere .
Only flushed embarrassment kept Addy from ruining the moment by blurting out what was on his mind since he'd seen that "Wow you're beautiful." wasn't that good a conversation starter back at his parent's nightclub. So instead he just stared at her dumbstruck… which admittedly wasn’t much better. After a few moments of silence, the girl shifted on her feet nervously “Um… I’m Dawn Apollios.” she said, her voice clear and slightly musical to Addy’s ears “I-it’s a little too sunny outside for me to go back to the dorms, so I was going to go to the library-” Dawn explained, motioning to the window’s on the other side of the room… not that Addy could take his eyes off her to look, before continuing “then I heard your music and it was very pretty so I… um…” her cheeks flushed a soft pink color “W-what I mean is… may I please come in?” she said once more, repeating her original question.
Addy, who’d barely managed to get his slacked jaw to shut, just nodded weakly. At a loss for what else to try to say or do in this situation. "Thank you." Dawn said politely, giving a slight bow of her head as she did so, as she daintily stepped into the room and shut the door behind her. "Y-you can sit here if you want?" Addy managed to squeak out as he motioned to the empty space on the bench next to him. Admittedly that wasn’t the best first thing to say to an angel that had graced you with her presence, but it was a marked improvement over being struck mute. “Thank you.” the heliopitle said, the hint of a timid smile on her face, as she daintily (Addy was struggling to think of any word to describe her motion other than dainty and beautiful) walked over and settled onto the offered seat. Resting her parasol in her lap as she did so. The scraggy’s mind raced for what to do now, his heart pounding so hard it felt like it was gonna tear from his chest and run screaming from the room, as he took a deep breath and…
“M-my names Addy, Addy Housutapas… i-it’s nice to meet you Dawn.”
Okay, good, that was a good step one… the fact Addy had no idea what step two would be didn’t help him feel any more confident though. “Nice to meet you Addy.” the girls smile was a little less timid now but still shy “Um… c-could you p-play more of that song p-please?” she asked, a timid squeak sneaking into the request. “S-sure!” Addy squeaked in return, mentally kicking himself for how quickly he’d responded and how stupid it had to have made him sound. Either way the scraggy was confident he’d be more… well… confident with his keyboard than he was actually trying to talk to Dawn. Gently resting his hands back on the keyboard Addy took a deep, calming breath (that absolutely did not work) as he let his fingers, muscle memory, and his ears do the work. Soon the sweet melody was flowing again.
Aside from the music echoing there was silence in the room. Addy didn’t dare take his eyes away from the keyboard, even if he wasn’t really using sight to play at this point, to see if she was enjoying it… at least till he heard her trying to sing along to the song. It was beautiful despite only being “La la la” in her soft, sweet tones and motivated Addy to finally take a peek over to her. Her eyes were shut as she gently swayed to and fro to the music, her ears (er… head fins? Head frills? Addy wasn’t sure what they were called) swaying along with her. To his credit Addy managed to keep from missing a note at the sight of such a vision of loveliness as he gulped silently and struggled to think of something to ask her since that seemed like the next logical step.
"Uh… w-why was it too sunny for you?" the scraggy stuttered out after failing to come up with anything better. He was a bit curious why it being sunny would keep her inside, but if he had to guess… "Oh, um… w-well I have Dry Skin-" she said timidly, Addy watching her delicately put a hand to her cheek "the ability I mean… but… well… it's a bit stronger than it should be, or more sensitive maybe? I've never been sure what the right way to describe it would be…" she paused to look down at the parasol in her lap, which more or less confirmed Addy's assumption as Dawn continued "But being in the bright sun hurts and can do damage if I'm not careful, usually my parasol is enough but it was brighter than I want to risk so… um…" she trailed off softly, looking away shyly as she did so.
"Right… um…" Addy mentally kicked himself for bringing up such a sensitive subject… as he struggled to come up with a new subject to replace it. "D-do you have any siblings?" the lizard finally blurted out, at a loss for what else to say as he moved from the waltz to a slightly more lively melody, closer to ragtime, partially and unintentionally reflecting his own racing nerves. "Oh, no. It's just me, mother, and father. I'm an only child." Dawn said in a casual tone, meaning Addy had managed to avoid stepping on a sensitive or uncomfortable issue this time. "Do you have any siblings?" she said, returning the question and managing to sound genuinely curious.
"Yep, got lots of big siblings." the scraggy replied, a bit more at ease… at least till her follow up question "So you're the baby of your family?" Addy barely managed to avoid hitting a sour note at her phrasing before she continued "Y-You didn't mention any younger siblings… s-so I just assumed… oh, are you the only shiny in your family?" Dawn added as Addy caught her looking at his off color scales which glittered slightly in the light. "Y-yeah… mom and dad always say how surprised they were that I was a shiny… proud too…" he managed to mumble, feeling a tiny bit self conscious now. Her sweet smile put that to rest, though it also made his heart resume pounding out a drum-line to go with the piano music in his chest, as she said "That's nice, could you tell me a little more about your family? I'll tell you more about mine too if you'd like…" As the blushing scraggy only managed to nod to the offer.
Addy wasn't sure how long the conversation went on after that, he'd been too caught up in talking to Dawn to bother paying attention to things like time. Listening to her talk about the small home she'd grown up in surrounded by gardens and greenery it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say the helioptile came from a completely different world compared to the noisy city and busy nightclub Addy had grown up in. Yet for reasons Addy couldn't fathom Dawn listened intently whenever it was his turn to talk and actually seemed interested in what he had to say. By the time they'd finally wound down to a satisfied silence Addy wasn't sure what he was playing on the keyboard anymore, the few notes he plinked out at a leisurely pace reminded him a bit of an old music box tune and seemed to just… suit the otherwise silent music room.
"W-well… i-it looks like it's gotten less sunny…" Dawn finally said, looking towards the windows as Addy was still too busy looking at her to spare them a glance "I… I probably should get going to the dorms…" she almost sounded reluctant as she said that, which somehow was the spark Addy needed to realize what he should say next. "W-would you like to do this again?" the scraggy suddenly blurted out, before regaining enough composure to clarify "Er… m-meet in the music room and talk and listen to me play my keyboard I mean…" Addy trailed off toward the end, realizing how… silly that sounded as he hung his head a little and looked away…
Only to snap back up the moment he head Dawn say "That sounds lovely~" as he looked up and found, judging by the small, sweet smile on the helioptile's face, she was serious. What followed was a dream-like blur for Addy as he gathered up his keyboard and stuff before walking Dawn to one of the exits, the two lizards setting up when they could meet like this as they went. Bye the time he waved goodbye to her and watched her pop her parasol open before walking off towards the school dorms Addy was starting to regain his senses… or at least enough of them to realize he had a deliriously happy grin on his face as he turned back around and stepped back into the building…
Just in time to realize he'd more-or-less just set up a date with the most beautiful girl he'd ever met. Addy swayed on his feet for a moment, eyes wide at this realization… before they rolled back and the scraggy tumbled forward, having had all he could take as he fainted hard and smacked his hard head against the floor. Elsewhere one of the PCA's janitors recognized the sound of cracking tile echoing in the halls as he groaned, wondering what broke them THIS time…

PCA - Lizards in LoveA scraggy boy, sat on the bandstand and plinked out a single note from the keyboard sitting on his lap.
