I was one of two winners of
composerfox's pageview contest, and he decided to award both of us the prize, which was a custom composition. For my part, I decided to put a twist on it and had him simply send me a score and parts which I would then record. He got to practice getting ideas down on paper and I got to practice lifting them back off.
Instruments used, in score order...
Flute
Clarinet
Alto Sax
Mini Trombone (also known as slide trumpet)
Trombonium (large-bore valve trombone)
Tuba
Found percussion (his discretion; he chose "large metal bowl slapped with hand", "two pieces of sandpaper rubbed together", and "dinner glass struck with fork")
Toy piano
Everything was played live by me, although I confess to a touch of pitch correction to keep a couple of phrases from getting wonky once I had the mix going. ComposerFox didn't have me do any slide tricks with the mini trombone, so my job was to simply play it as accurately as I could and perhaps fool the listener into thinking it was a standard trumpet. (No pitch correction on that one!) The tuba turned out to be the real struggle for some reason, and I'm still not entirely happy with my final take, but it beats the heck out of some previous takes. The toy piano seems to be turning into one of my sonic trademarks; it's happiness in piano form.
The percussion was the real question mark here. Not having a perfect "metal bowl", I had to tap and slap most of my kitchen containers, listening for something with the proper metallic thump. My turkey roaster sounded, spectacularly, like a muted gong; thinking that might be annoying, however, I ended up going with my favorite Revere Ware spaghetti pot. A cherished parfait glass yielded a nice note way on top, and the sandpaper was nice, gritty 80 weight from the local hardware store.
Check
composerfox out and give him a shout because he made this a really fun project at a time in my life when I needed a really fun project!
