Endless Realms bestiary - Animaculus
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
Just a totally normal man and his totally normal dog out for a stroll :V
Turns out, my art director needed more dream realm creatures and gave me free reign to come up with some additional concepts - my idea for these "little lives" were that they are dream fragments that have gained sentience, and long to be as real as the creatures that spawned them. Childlike in their naivety, animaculi are impish creatures that vary in appearance and demeanour, always modelled after corporeal creatures but inevitably riddled with a variety of errors, as their understanding of normal corporeal lives is limited.

Today I had lunch with the Goddess. "Steinman," she said... "I'm here to free you from the tyranny of the commonplace. I'm here to show you a new kind of beauty." I asked her, "What do you mean, goddess?" "Symmetry, dear Steinman. It's time we did something about symmetry..."
Steinman: Four-oh silk and ...done.
Nurse: The nose looks terrific, Doctor Steinman ...Doctor?
Steinman: You know, looking at her now... I didn't realize how much her face sags... Scalpel...
Nurse: Excuse me?
Steinman: Scalpel!
Nurse: Uh, doctor, she's not booked for a face lift...
Steinman: Let's just come in here and... *starts whistling*
Nurse: Doctor... Stop cutting... Doctor, stop cutting... Get me the chief of surgery! Get me the chief of surgery NOW!!!

Y'know, I wouldn't be surprised at all if they lacked internal organs - they probably just try to mimic what they see mostly, so I could see them being devoid of normal physiological requirements like ACTUAL bone or tissue, instead being mostly composed of a weird magic-y "clay."

This is going to be great. All of the dream world creatures you can come up with that looks like those creatures/ people. You can have a magical circus where the dream world and the waking world collide and boom. Everyone is amazed at what they see, and then maybe the the magic is heeled in the three ring circus as a jewel on an elephant creatures head that gets taken by a band of theives. So you have to go get it so the circus folk can go home to the dream world.
I think the most recent interesting dream I had was I dreamt there was an agrarian society of humans and plant-people who cooperated and did everything together, and everything seemed peaceful. But it turned out that the ancient mother-tree-thing had been enslaved, and her offspring bred to become a subservient slave race, and when the saplings start getting too old, they get sent off to be turned into fuel. I dreamt some saplings escaped being killed, however, and started a revolution. It was really neat :b
