i have been working with a cat rescuse to trap some feral cats (a feral cat is one that has become or was born wild and they live as wild animals) at my college as part of the TNR (trap nueter return) program which was set up by the united stated animal collation.
so far we have trapped 6 cats, fixed them and returned them except these 3.
the black and calico have been spayed and the tortie with the white nose is heavily pregnant. the 3 seem to get along really well and we know from one of the grounds keepers that the calico is the torties mom but it is unknown if the black one is the daughter of the tortie or the calico.
for now i am keeping all 3 together for moral support for the prego as the plan is to keep her untill her babies are 3 weeks old then seperate them so the babies can be hand raised as pets rather than imprint on their wild mother.
there are at least 9 more we know of that we are still trying to get
i have the traps hidden and chained in 3 places at the school, i check them every night at 11 and thankfully the teacher who started all this knew of a student to check them in the mornings (i HATED getting up early to check) though i am still the one to pick up the traps and take them to the vet and house them till they heal and return them.
it is real hit and miss with trapping, we go a few days with nothing and then catch one
the only thing that ticks me off is we caught the same black male 3 times now and an orange male tiwce T__T very irritatting. i would house them here till i am done but both are VERY wild and like to pee when scared and it REEKS. these three ladies are tolerant so long as i don't touch them or come within a foot of them and the calico reluctantly lets me pet her (but i doubt she is gonna tame up though as she stares at me all pissed off when i pet her)
we trapped 5 feral cats 2 years ago on the other side of the school, one i got as a 5 month old and managed to tame her up VERY WELL, her name is sweety and she loves to be petted, i think she is very touch sensitive is why we could tame her because now when we pet her she goes so limp its like she died (cept she is purring) and often rolls out of my lap. sweety is very special, not just because we trapped and tamed her but she also has a cute little tail that is half as long as it should be.
on top of all this i also foster babies for another cat rescue as well as prego moms and ones with tiny babies (though not at the moment, the prego feral will be enough work on her own) AND my sister is now a puppy raiser for service dogs and will get her first puppy in training next week.

assuming each of the 3 females i have caught and spayed would have had 4 kittens i prevented 12 more.
assuming half those are females then they and their moms would have made 36 kittens next year.
it seems kind of hopless catching them one at a time like we have been but when put in that perspective it does make a difference.
it is also nice to know the prego mom's kittens will become pets and not new ferals.

have you offered to pay for the spay?
i know the SPCA here does it for $45 (regular vet wanted twice that)
offer to take them in yourself and pay for it, if they turn you down then they are nutz.
i for one hate seeing unspayed cats who are left to be baby machines as they can have kittens at 5 months old and have babies every 5 months amd it wears their bodies out so fast.

That is great that you do work like this, there should be more people like you able to do it. I wish I could help animals like that, but my dad and brother have mild allergies so we can't have them in the house. However that doesn't stop the stray male tabby from thinking our house belongs to him since our dog is gone ... he also likes to scare away men he doesn't want around me, possessive kitty lol, hes a very good cat to me even though I don't own him at all hehe
I love my silly old outside kitty ... he'll be 15 this year and going strong and yes, hes neutered :-P
