I agree the Switch is what Nintendo WANTED to do with the Wii U, but hardware limitations in 2009/2010 didn't let that happen. I also blame poor marketing & PR with said Wii U. The Switch has had EXCELLENT marketing and an appearance on Jimmy Fallon in early December! SUPER BOWL COMMERCIAL!
Personally, I'm waiting until they release a special edition so I can grab that fucker. As for the system itself, I love the idea of console Zelda portable and SKYRIM portable, rumored online subscriptions will be cheaper than the competition, 720p on the go, the charging will be a mini USB and not some special port only Nintendo uses, excellent battery life for the joycons, strong graphics engine on par with the standard PS4, ect.
This sounds like an A Grade console to me.
As for Di's opinion, SEGA forever. Genesis/SEGA CD, Saturn, & Dreamcast made gaming milestones. CD technology, cable gaming service, wireless controllers, online services, online realtime multiplayer, and the strong technology those three generations. SEGA were the revolutionaries in gaming.

I think the software lineup shows a pretty dire state for the system, out the gate, and implies it was indeed rushed, despite a rather sparse lineup last year. They're largely ports (Zelda, Mario Kart, Splatoon 2 looks more like an expansion), and the first *real* new game for the system is Mario, launching in the holidays. Plus the third party support is mostly promises to make games (or again, ports... Rayman Legends, for real??). Even Skyrim will be a port of the 2011 original, not the recently 2016 remaster. Yikes.
I dunno what to expect long term. I imagine having all their software teams on one box will help with droughts, but I'd say give it until the holidays to pick up the system. They obviously will have some kinks to work out with the system, especially regarding the paid online service stuff. Nintendo has had a spotty track record with online accounts >.>
I honestly was hoping it'd be a Virtual Console powerhouse mixed all of Nintendo's big guns focused on pushing software. Maybe it'll get there eventually. We'll see!

I can see it is a buncha ports, yes. In all honesty I'm getting Breath of the Wild on Wii U as I predict it might become rare much like Twilight Princess is for the Gamecube.
The third party support is it's greatest strength for this system, much like it was for the original Wii, but then again the Wii had an over-saturation of motion games.
Waiting for a special edition Switch is perfect for me, as a collector. The kinks will be ironed out, like you said, and hopefully original games will be out for it like Mario Odyssey. The selling point that gets me is region free. I blame coin collecting for my video game collecting addiction, so to find out I can add Japanese games is appealing to the collector in me.

Oh yeah, totally get the Wii U version. It's got the benefit of the being the original version in development, and it will likely be a hard-sought collector's item in the future.
I do commend Nintendo for finally going region free. Yay! Now all those quirky Japanese games that would never come out in the West can be easily played.

In a way I love my Wii U. I have a fondness for failed video gaming systems/platforms. I got a 32X and a Saturn, showing my love for those things.
I bought the Wind Waker special edition Wii U at my Pell City, AL K-Mart for full price. It was a leftover from Xmas 2013. I still have it and it's box.

I feel the same way about the Switch. I was very excited for it, hoping it'd be a return to form, but I lost all interest after the conference. I haven't totally written it off, but let's just say the Wii U was the first Nintendo system I didn't buy, ever (besides Virtual Boy, which is just impossible to find)
I actually am not that big on the Dreamcast. I much preferred the Genesis/Mega Drive. I'd say my personal favourite consoles are the PS1, NES and SNES. For handhelds, it'd be GBA & DS.
Oh, I also think the Gamecube is better than the Dreamcast X3

Ah okay so your just writing Di as a bit of a biased fan girl of her fav console?
Unfortunately I never owned a Gamecube I had a PS1 and PS2. The WiiU was the first Nintendo console I gotten. I mostly owned their handhelds like the Gameboy Color (the transparent purple one), the Gameboy Advance SP, and currently the 3DS.

Yeah, I mean, Di being a hardcore gamer means she'll have some of my views. While I'm not a huge Sega fan, I know enough about it that I can play up how hardcore she is about it for those Sega fans out there to get a kick out of ;3
I really loved the GBA. Especially the SP model. That and the DS lite are pretty much tied as my favourite handhelds ever.

They did learn from one big mistake from the Wii U though. Advertising. most people thought that the Wii U was a game pad you bought to use with the original Wii. and now nintendo actually went full force in advertising that this is a new console entirely and what it can do. and it's worked out for them pretty well. So we'll just have to wait and see how the console holds up.

Paying over $300 for a console without a game feel like a rip off. Plus it Nintendo might screw up because all of the game price setup. That what I did with the PS4 which you can get for less $250 with a game and still can buy games. So I'm doing the waiting game like I did with the PS4.
Don't remind me like how my first 3DS turned after sending it for 12-15 repairs because the home button row was actually a sticker then real buttons that keeps peeling off from high humanity most of the time in summer. Then I stop sending it for repairs after getting a 3DS XL which did have real buttons.
Yeah, I bought Twilight Princess as soon as it came out (did the same for the HD upgrade for the Wii U, the one that came boxed with a Wolf Link amibo, which wasn't rare like I thought it would be. I was told that Nintendo was releasing only a few of those to promote the game [like they did with Skyward Sword, which I also bought the Special Edition of with the soundtrack CD included] and then start selling it as a normal game with the amibo separate, which never happened. In fact, you can't even find the Wolf Link amibo by itself, unless you're lucky enough to find one at a used games store.), and never really saw a copy of that game on the shelves again, so I'm glad I got it when I did as it's now my absolute favorite Zelda title right now.
From what I've heard, though, the Switch version of Breath of the Wild is far better in terms of graphics at least. I don't know how the gameplay compares, but I don't care. At least now we FINALLY have an official Zelda title for the Wii U, even though we had to wait until the end of it's fucking run to get it. And on that note, is anyone else pissed that we never got that awesome looking Zelda title for the Wii U that they showed off at E3 a couple of years back? You know, the one with the Wii U's HD display and Twilight Princess styled graphics, that they promised us for the Wii U?
I think I'd rather have that game, honestly, as I think the graphics were much better (I've always hated cell shading in games and cartoons, it ruins everything for me, like I can't even concentrate on the gameplay or the story. Even if it has a good one). I've always been a fan of Twilight Princess' darker and more realistic graphics style, and was totally blown away when I first played it. Although, from the demos I've seen of Breath of the Wild, the graphics don't look too horrible so who knows.
And with the 'pay per month' thing they're doing with the online service, my hopes of the Switch having 'channels' like the Wii/Wii U did are dashed to pieces. And they're not even doing a free option like the 360 did with their 'Xbox Live Silver' service, so I won't be able to watch Anime on the Switch. :< I have a CrunchyRoll Premium membership, so I have that app on every device I own that there's an app for (Laptop, 360, Wii U [as both a Wii U channel and a Wii channel], my PS3 and my smartphone). A lot of people are complaining about that and wishing that Nintendo would just stick to games like they used to, but I actually like the ability to browse the 'net and have different 'channels' like YouTube, CrunchyRoll, etc. Hell, the 'E' in NES stood for 'Entertainment', so I'm glad they added something other than games to the Wii/Wii U to make an 'Entertainment' system again, like Sony and Microsoft was already doing with their systems, but apparently I'm in the minority. x3 Sure, most of the time I just use my systems for games, but I also like to watch Anime on them or the occasional YouTube video, which I couldn't do with the GC and before, so I'm kinda bummed that you won't be able to really do that with the Switch, but we'll see.

Yeah the Wolf Link amiibo I thought would be rare, but nope! Oh well, I adore Midna, so I'm okay with it ;3
The Switch version of BOTW runs at 900p instead of 720p, like the Wii U version does. While this is a slight boost, it's not 1080p. Seriously, their new system can't even run 1080p in 2017. Yikes.
Other than that, the Switch version has some 'enhanced sounds' which... what? XD
I really don't know what they'll do regarding their network plans. Considering they want you to download a phone app to use online voice chat (a feature that's been around since the PS2 and original Xbox)... let's just say I'm not too optimistic with how feature-rich it'll be :X

Yeah, I know. The Amiibo that's turning out to be rare, believe it or not, is Zelda. I can't find one of her in-store now to save my life. I could always order her online, but she's getting more popular all the time (and more expensive). I already have Link from OoT (with some hints of other games thrown in for good measure), and I'm debating on getting a Pixel Link from the original LoZ (they both do the same thing in Twilight, refill your arrows, but I'm thinking of getting the Pixel Link just for collecting and nostalgia), but I want a Zelda also to replenish my hearts in Twilight Princess. And a Ganondorf to make the game harder, of course, but I mainly want those two for collecting some nostalgia.
And I heard that the Switch could run in 1080p, at least that's what some of the people who've played it at E3 said, but maybe they were wrong. If it's only 900p, then it's not worth it to get the system. I'm perfectly happy with 720p for games, and I like the gamepad's functionality too much to give it up. I also hate the fact that Nintendo seems to be running away from the 'console' market, and is instead making a handheld that you can just plug into your tv if you wanted to. Now, if that was the case (and they just grew a pair and came out and admitted it) then I'd be fine with the 900p, and then they could come out with the actual console at 1080p and go from there. Hit the market with a one-two punch and get ahead of the game (pardon the pun..) for once, and make the two cross-compatible. Save a game on an SD card and transfer that between the console and the handheld so you can play it on the go, then just transfer it back when you get home. Hell, Sony already did that with their PS3 and some games, although I think you had to get the same game for the Vita that you had for the PS3, but at least that was a good idea.
Nintendo is really dropping the ball with their network stuff. It's pretty sad that Microsoft and Sony have had that tech for years, and Nintendo still hasn't quite gotten the hang of it yet. So yeah, I guess I can say goodbye to the dream of watching my anime on the new Switch. Oh well, I'll just have to make do with watching it on my Laptop, 360, Wii U channel, Wii channel and smartphone. x3
And yeah, enhanced sounds? Really Nintendo? Really? You can go through the trouble of making sounds that sound more....soundish..but you can't give us a 1080p console?

And the 100th APAP Milestone talks about the Nintendo's of the Past Present and Future.
I agree with Diamond. Granted I just want the Wii U for the new Star Fox and Pikmin 3, but it all depends on what continuity/new series they release for the next system that'll make me want to give it a shot.

Now if "Sonic Adventure 3" would become a reality and be released ONLY for the Switch then I would most certainly buy it, or the next installment of Star Fox that takes place after "Assault" and is the real canon continuity title that cancels out "Command" since it's a non-canon game.
Even I find it to be very skeptical of the Switch's limitation hardware and the lack of games they're realeasing. Of course Zelda BotW will be in no doubt one hell of a game.
And if this Switch of their's doesn't kick off as any good as the Wii U has tried to be, their better off being a software company like Sega is doing, but hopely not as poor with most of their franchises.
Also the Gamecube was the best nintendo console in my opinion. :u

I like that Nintendo thinks outside the box, but usually their ideas don't end up being wholly original. Like the Wiimote was actually a third party that showed it to them. Sony was working on their own around the same time. Likewise, a patent from a few years ago shows a new Sony handheld with detachable controllers, like the Switch. Not saying Sony is just as innovative, just that I think we've kinda hit a plateau of how much you can innovate with an input method before everyone has the same ideas.
And yeah, I think Nintendo would be better suited focusing on just games. That's truly what everyone likes about them ultimately. Plus, console boxes are likely to eventually vanish in the next decade or two.

It's honestly upsetting how negative people are against Nintendo nowadays. I don't even understand why. They're not doing bullshit like EA, they're not giving us underhanded crap like both Microsoft and Sony together, and yet so much shit.
Can anyone here really justify all the hate towards Nintendo? I feel like people nowadays just think it's cool to hate on them.

Mmmm, I will speak as a former hardcore Nintendo fan. Here are the issues I have with their recent trends:
- Pushing gimmicky control methods to entice casual audiences
- Diminishing 'hardcore' game franchises to focus on casual games (Wii Music, 1, 2 Switch, etc.)
- Doubling down on pushing Mario/Zelda/Pokemon while giving other key franchises rare entries
- Not linking VC account systems so if you bought a VC game on one platform, you have to re-buy it on others
- Not including things like adapters/chargers with their systems (for real? Not everyone owns a prior system)
- Lacking third party support. They burnt those bridges in the SNES days, and never truly recovered
- Premium prices for their games and systems, even if the games are years old, and the HW being underpowered
- They want people to pay for an online account, but the voice chat is a phone app (!!!) and you get 'free' games for a month
- Purposefully restricting shipments to say things are selling out due to demand, like the Wii, Amiibos, NES Classic, etc.
And this is more personal, but their treatment of women and LGBT characters has been very old-fashioned, to a fault. Women are damsels to be rescued. Samus was finally given a voice and became a whiny teenager with daddy issues. Link in BOTW could've been female or even Zelda, which got fans excited, but the series director laughed off the suggestion and said that it would make no sense b/c of the 'Triforce not being in balance' or some nonsense. There was the Tomodachi Life 'gay marriage was a bug we patched out' PR mess, and then there's Tingle... lol. They need to broaden their horizons and try mixing things up a bit. I think they risk being considered old fashioned in a bad way if they don't try updating with the times, socially.
I understand there are counter points to a lot of these arguments, but I think the main thing is that often they're work arounds, or exceptions, but not the way Nintendo wants you to go about playing their games. It's turned off people like me, who used to love Nintendo. I think they need new leadership and perspective, and hopefully them letting younger staff try stuff like Splatoon will lead to more risk-taking with good results. We'll see.

Also forgot to add: They love to DMCA and go after youtubers, fan artists, fan game developers, etc. They basically are so draconian on that stuff they hurt their fans in the mediums that modern game culture uses to celebrate games. They're not the only company to do that, and they have the legal rights to do so, but they are probably the harshest. It makes ppl like me who would probably draw some fanart of my fave Ninty characters think twice about ever showing it publicly.
For me, they ended up on the back burner when they killed their 3rd party support and their selections of RPGs were limited. Back in the day I wanted to play games like Bahaumat's Lagoon and the snes Dragon Warrior games, none of which saw the light of day here until years later.
Their one saving grace has the handheld market. For short time killers, a game boy (or the equivalent) is fine and a few titles did find their way to the states on it. That said, it hasn't been enough for me to have any real loyalty to the company and in the end if I'm going to sit down and play games it would be on pc vs. running out and purchasing a new console ever so many years.

true but if they decide to kill off the 3ds for the switch then I think they will be shooting themselves in the foot as the 3ds has been going good unlike Sony which had a thing for releasing new systems which pretty much required you to buy everything again unless you bought all your games digitally which carried on to the vita with pretty much no backwards compatibility to old psp owners. I'll wait but calling now I don't think the switch will do well in today's market
Granted I've modded mine to only play PS1 gems as that's all it's really good for now
Granted I've modded mine to only play PS1 gems as that's all it's really good for now
- I personally love the gimmicky control methods, and they generally are never necessary unless the game is entirely built around it. Nintendo is the only company willing to experiment, and god bless them for it.
- I'm not sure what hardcore games you speak of, in all honesty, so I can't respond to this.
- Why is it wrong to stick with existing franchises? There's no real new games, genre, or gameplay anymore. And the few things that are new, Nintendo pioneered the majority of them (or helped to (also indie games mostly)). I'm also not sure where you heard that other key franchises are being turned down. I'm quite sure it's the opposite, even though they do have to get through Nintendo's quality control, which is ridiculously strict.
- Can't do anything but agree with this. Sadly, Nintendo is/was also the only one who actually gives a shit about their old games. PS1 classics plz?
- Don't see an issue with the charger thing. It's only better for people who DO own a former system, as it saves them not using or throwing it away. I should also add that a lot of things that Nintendo does and people find weird, is just because they found a better way, and people are just not used to it.
- They did not recover, and I'm sure that they haven't recovered because of both Microsoft and Sony. But hey, Sonic is still showing up on Nintendo consoles, so that's nice.
- I'm aware that there's a few games out there that don't run that amazing in certain situations, and that would be the only reason I would care about the hardware. People are misguided what consoles are about, and powerful hardware is not one of these things. Additionally, I do agree that Nintendo should do more 'sales', they're hurting because of it.
- Can't help but agree here. When I heard this I got pretty upset. Even if Microsoft and Sony have been doing the subscription thing for forever now.
- I heard this one before, and it has been denied by Reggie himself. Regardless on if it's true or not, things selling out is always a good sign in my book.
I think the more personal stuff you mention has more to do with Japan itself and their culture than actual Nintendo. Also the more old-fashioned culture that still remains there actually. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on this though. I feel like people make too much of an issue about making any and everything LGBT-friendly, but that's just my opinion.
As for the DMCA stuff, I once read that it's because they need to to protect their IP at every turn that they can. Because the very moment they drop one suit, more will follow, and the use of their IP will be compromised.
I still love Nintendo. I admire what they try and that they try, there's no company out there like them. And the day that Nintendo stops being a thing, we will have a very large hole in the gaming industry that nobody so far has managed to even touch.
EDIT: Oh and thanks for the lengthy response by the way, much appreciated!

I agree about the switch to me I feel that the system is being rushed if you look at the release dates of the gamecube, wii and wiiu
I don't think Nintendo will learn from past mistakes Don't get me wrong the 3ds has been going strong in the handheld market unlike Sony which did a similar thing Nintendo did and essentially killed it's own system in the process. Funny that the Original 3ds can still play all the new 3ds titles considering how long it's been on the market

It definitely is. Nintendo didn't release much heavy hitting software last year. Everyone saw the Wii U was collapsing. They essentially are pushing the Switch out early so they can sell it with Zelda and try to cover for the Wii U slump. Expect them to purposefully restrict shipments and claim it's selling out because it's popular, like they did with the Wii, Amiibos, NES Classic, etc.
plus all of them rely soo heavily on their nintendo exclusive titles which isn't much but to me feels like the same batch of games with their consoles that I'm pretty meh on the upcoming switch
Granted I've gone PC master race and don't plan on looking back it's much better on pc as you don't need to keep buying new hardware and games with usually limited backwards compatibility

Amusing expression on Puzzle there. X3 But I do have some thoughts on Diamond's answer, as a similar discussion came up a few months back with someone.
It's said that every company tends to go in cycles of getting more cocky and faceplanting before getting better again. Generally feels like every third console is when the dive happens. (From the perspective of the United States games market, as a disclaimer.)
-- Master System, overshadowed by the NES in the States but not a bad system; Genesis hit big; Saturn was hampered by management and largely untapped, especially in North America, but was pretty decent at what it could do; Dreamcast practically turned into a legend.
-- PlayStation1, big hit; PlayStation2, huge success; PlayStation3, expensive, lots of stumbling and development pitfalls, but overall not bad in itself; PlayStation4, occasional flaws but Sony is trying to correct themselves.
-- Xbox, modestly successful; Xbox 360, successful even in spite of poor hardware issues for a while; Xbox One, had that DRM snafu early on that was rolled back but the system itself is still trying to find itself in the market for some. The "third" might be more of an overlap/two-half-issues in Microsoft's case. Remains to be seen.
-- The NES helped save the games industry in the States; the Super NES was just as successful; N64 stuck with carts and turned away devs as a result; GameCube was pretty solid but overshadowed; Wii was a dominator of the generation; Wii U was good but poor company handling on several levels made it Nintendo's Saturn -- decent system at its core but lots of untapped potential.
This leaves the Switch in an interesting position. Based on patterns, it could be a good system and do well, being Nintendo's Dreamcast moment. But it could also be decent in general yet struggle at times like the Wii U, Xbox One, and PlayStation4 each have.
I'll be holding out, mainly for budget reasons, but I'll be rooting for it to do well. It's an interesting system idea and I hope it does well, along with the XB1 and PS4.

Oh yeah, I definitely agree console makers get cocky. I think this is why you never see a first party stay in charge for more than two gens. Nintendo had NES/SNES. Got cocky. Sony had PS1/PS2. Got cocky. Microsoft had Xbox360 and would've had XB1, but they got cocky and Sony swooped in with PS4. Now Sony's not really cocky... but I really dunno who will 'win' next gen. I think we'll see things become more homogenous in the future.
I think Switch will do about the same as the Wii U, ultimately. If they discontinue the 3DS and push Switch as a portable, it might do somewhat better. I think the lack of good third party support will really hurt them in the long run.
I was mostly hoping for the Switch to have a robust VC library. I would've been stoked about that. Seems their 'pay a subscription service to get a VC game to play temporarily for a month' scheme may throw that all up in the air, tho, as they'll likely slowly milk that over time.

The third party support and Virtual Console points are good ones to make.
Devs seem to love bailing on Nintendo over the years for one reason or another, the N64 carts, the GameCube minidisks, the lack of HD on the Wii, etc. Nintendo will definitely need their support for once to help the Switch.
As for the monthly subscription thing, yeah, that's going to hurt I think. I see titles that I would want to have on there but then think that I could just hook up any of my old systems and play those, with the bonus of having my 20-year-old saves available, too, if applicable. Yoshi's Island, check. Sonic 1, 2, 3&K, check. DKC1, 2, and 3, triple check. The new VC setup has basically nothing to appeal to me this time around with that business model whereas before it was more just because I was a bit lazy to bother getting many games on it.

I think it initially had a lot to do with the draconian restrictions Nintendo made on developers in the NES era. They did it in part to keep a glut of bad games from flooding the market (hence the Nintendo seal of quality, limiting the number of games a publisher could release a year, etc.), but they were doing things like making publishers pay for their own cartridges, and then taking massive cuts out of the profits, censoring titles heavily, not allowing ports to other systems, etc. It changed with the SNES era, slowly, but by the N64 era, I think publishers were more than happy to jump to other systems, and they never really looked back. I guess the wounds were deep!
I would have had more faith in the monthly subscription thing if Nintendo didn't have such a bad history with online accounts and the VC. I would've bought a Switch to be a VC box if they did a Netflix-style monthly subscription to play a library of old games, with streaming features. But it seems it's just a 'you can play this title for a month and then you have to buy it if you want to play it again'. Suuuuch a bad idea, yikes.
I also wonder if they'll take years to even get the Switch's VC library to match the Wii's. I don't think the Wii U/3DS VCs ever did match even that one's.

I love the Dreamcast, really, but I feel like a lot of people who were upset at the thing's tragically short lifespan due to a combination of the PS2's popularity and the rise of video game piracy are lionizing the thing more than it really deserves. The WiiU actually had a similarly short lifespan, it only came out 3 years ago and is already being replaced, and even though I'm looking forward to picking up my switch on launch day I still feel sad that the U didn't catch on.
Wow. Diamond has a point.
Though, I never had a Dreamcast, So I can't say for sure. I was a Nintendo fanboy growing up. Right up to the point I learned that the latest Final Fantasy game (VII) was going to the PlayStation instead. So I got the PlayStation instead of the N64. The only Sega consoles I ever owned was the Master System and the Genesis, and I didn't get those until 2004-2005. By then I had the PlayStation 2. Also, these days my Nintendo Fanboyism doesn't really go beyond the NES and SNES.
I'll eventually get a Wii U.
