Nathaniel smiled softly as Ilyanna wiggled in her chair, hearing the soft, almost inaudible whines under her breath. She wanted to run around in the garden, and chase butterflies, like she did at home. He placed a hand on the back of her neck, giving her collar a gentle tug.

“Hush, darling.” He soothed, petting her hair. “That’s enough. We are guests, and you must be on your best behavior. Am I clear?” Nathaniel asked, making Ilyanna lean her head against his side with a whimper.

“Yes, Papa…” she mumbled sadly, though, easily distracted puppy that she was, she perked right up when a servant brought out a tray of snacks.

“M'lord, my master apologizes for the delay.” The servant said, bowing as he set the tray on the table. “One of the wolves is birthing in the barn, and he wanted to be there. He bid me tell you to let your pet off leash to play, and to enjoy a small tea before he could join you.”

Ilyanna began to wiggle, and Nathaniel smiled. “Very good, thank you. Ilyanna, kneel.” He ordered, and when his pet did so, he unleashed her, giving her neck a squeeze. “Stay in ear shot, pet. Don’t dig, or I’ll take the birch to you.” He warned, before reaching down and giving her bottom a small, light, smack. “Go.” He said, and Ilyanna was off like a shot.
