Special for vaquitatje on Tumblr.
This time I was asked to draw a really special whale again - wild russian orca with a spinal injury. It was really hard to reference her, as there's only two photos of her: goo.gl/cXhJJK ;
So, I did kind of a "study" and painted her markings based on other russian orcas, who live in the same area. This disabled female was sighted by scientists from Far East Russia Orca Project during summer season of 2014. Despite her disability, she did not look skinny, suggesting that she might get food from her family members. Also, even though she was surrounded by her pod, there was one special character - an adult male, who always stayed close to the disabled orca. I couldn't resist and added him to my painting.
Back to the art topic, this one was both: tough and easy. Tough as it was hard to make the female orca look correctly considering her disability. Мany-many little jellyfish didn't let me be lazy even for a moment - lots of those greenish jellys took quite a lot of time. Of course I didn't draw each single one from 0, that would take months for me, lol. I created around 6-7 different jellys and then copy-pasted them, slightly changing minor things (their form, for example).
What was really easy, is to choose the colors. This art was posted on Tumblr and Insta yesterday and I've heard an opinion already that this is about romance. Well, I thought of this while creating that piece, there is definitely some romantic vibe coming, but the main theme of this drawing is support. I was always inspired by whales supporting their pod members or even other animals from completely different species. I was always inspired by people supporting each other too. I didn't always had it, especially in one of my darkest couple of years. That was the reason I chose dark-blue color as the main one. And then there comes green color - a color of growth, harmony and safety - in this painting it symbolizes all those acts of kindness and help that make our lives better, especially during bad periods of our lifetime.
This painting has a few flaws, surely, and I'm gonna take those in mind to not let this be in my new works.
