Whiptails are among the hardiest reptile-like creatures native to the Jutland Rainforests of the southern Tourian continent. Though their appearance may lead one to believe that they are predatory, they are in fact omnivores, strongly leading toward herbivores in overall food preference. They mostly feed on succulent roots, fruit that falls from the massive jungle trees and fungi. Their razor-sharp teeth and powerful claws are made for clearing dense brush and tearing up woody plant stalks for ease of digestion.
The primary defense of any Whiptail is not their saber-like teeth, nor their sharp claws, but the extremely long, powerful tail they sport. The tail is capable of breaking bone, slicing flesh and generating localized sonic claps that can disorient predators. As social animals one can identify a group of Whiptails from miles away simply by listening for the semi-regular sound of their tails cracking through the air, used both as a form of communication among the near-sapient animals and as a warning to intruders.
Whiptails are, biologically, close to Earth-based proto-mammals known as Synapsids, most closely the Therapsid branch. Though they are ostensibly reptiles, Whiptails seem to be in a state of evolutionary flux. Some have external genitalia, some bear live young rather than eggs, and some have developed manes and ruffs of coarse fur. These anomalies indicate a movement away from their reptile ancestry toward full mammalian traits.
Their intelligence is considerable, and they are capable of complex thought, planning and emotional attachment. Fully capable of love, spite and humor, they are valued as life-long partners, friends and frequently lovers by the Jutland Trolls. Whiptails are powerful protectors, stalwart companions and friends that will stand by your side for their entire natural lifespan, upwards of 90 years.
