I was actually doubtful I would post a "real" version of Rosalynn. The people helping me do my videos want me to start taking them more seriously and posting the songs on iTunes. I think I'll probably sell three copies (and all of them to family)... but in the interest of humoring people who are making this all possible for me, I'll give it a shot at least.
This version might have ended up being the final if I hadn't had my butt kicked a bit by an individual here on the forum who shall remain nameless... ;)

Two things about this guy...
1.) He's young, good looking, earnest, and has solid mainstream talent which could cross over and get him a wide fan base. In short, he is all the things I am not. I don't say this stuff to deprecate myself. I give myself credit where credit is due; however, I try to remain realistic about where my place in the world actually is.
2.) He's a perfectionist to the point of being a malcontent. Read his posts concerning his dissatisfaction with his recording setup, at least the ones he hasn't deleted in frustration. One can't dissuade him from his conviction that his tracks are suffering from various maladies that none of us would ever hear if he didn't point them out. Being a guy who still digs music recorded on the most primitive technology (like, say, "Cakewalking Babies From Home", a big fave of mine which was recorded before the advent of electricity!), I can't help but feel a little sorry for this guy who does such great work yet seemingly gets no self-satisfaction from it.
But still it got me to thinking about whether the problem is actually mine, and whether I should simply be more critical myself and raise my standards. In short, I found that I had managed to ignore a big problem on this track. The clean guitar has moments of digital clipping, which I honestly didn't hear as I was recording it or doing the first two mix attempts. It's an annoying click sound on the attacks; you can hear it in the right speaker first, and then a beat later in the left because of the eighth-note delay I have on that track. It took me almost three hours to identify, and pencil in, all the errors. I'm still not sure I have fixed them all as well as I possibly could, but I did vastly improve the track, and you won't hear this problem on the video.
Some things I will leave... tiny rhythm variations which just make the thing sound more human, for example. I also didn't pitch my voice at all, because nothing about this particular song would be improved if I fixed the pitch; the imperfections, in this case, give it the hapless character I was trying to achieve. But one does need some kind of standards, and the day that I stop trying to think about raising them a bit is the day I should just stop trying to do anything.
Anyway, go check that guy out because he does excellent work. And when you're ready for something much cheesier, I'll be here.

I don't think it's possible to kick his butt more than he kicks his own. And then even if you tried, he'd tell you that you're kicking it all wrong and that it doesn't hurt enough.
The most recent mix, with better compression, better balance, and the repaired guitar track, will be used on the video, which was supposed to be up by now but got pushed back because my video editor got swamped with a more pressing project. I'm learning the hard way that I create a lot of busywork for the guys who shoot and edit my videos, so I'm trying to line up more people to do that so I'm not always waiting around.
Rosalynn loves you for faving her song!

I'm trying to live up to a certain sound I have in my head. Yeah, I'm pretty hard on myself because I feel like I have the talent to be out there and do music for a primary job, and the imperfections I hear just don't cut it for me. That's why I'm going to have things professionally engineered at a studio. I'm not the best singer or guitar player by far, so I think I have to let the strength of my song writing be the shining thing, though I'm working on that pretty heavily too.
And this... was freaking awesome. I got shades of They Might Be Giants all over this track, and granted, I'm only listening through my laptop speakers, so I can't pick out things like you're talking about until I listen on my Bose speakers at home. And hey, it all depends on what you're going for - if you're taking music as seriously as I am, then yes, you should try to perfect everything. If you're just doing it for fun or releasing it to just your friends, or FA, then you'll have to decide if it's worth it to you to get everything perfect.
If all I wanted to do is post to FA I'd continue to home record and be fine with it, but I have bigger aspirations of a more mainstream circuit, so....
Anyway, bravo. This is sooooooo good.

Ah, your ears must have been burning... You are too kind.
One flaw which this track will just have to live with (since I refuse to cheat and re-record it without the camera rolling) is the initial small-room reflection on the lead vocal. All by itself, soloed out, I swear I can't hear it. But after compressing it fairly heavily, it really starts jumping out even in a fairly dense mix. The horns have a touch of it too but I didn't squash them individually so they don't suffer as much. Live and learn.
I feel like I couldn't get across my entire opinion on this general topic in under five thousand words, and now isn't the time to type them; it's all simply, like most things, a work in progress.
