I recently figured out what species I'd want if i lived in the how to train your dragon universe, so i made a character around it.
Although in the process of doing so, I did a heck of a lot of research into the how to train your dragon universe, so it'd be easy for me to help you design your own dragon, or to draw your dragon oc if you'd be willing to commission me for it.
So this is Boogie Boo!
he's a Hobblegrunt dragon, which is a stoker class dragon which can change their color and use the frill on their head to both sense their surroundings, giving them a 360 degree awareness of their environment, and the ability to subtly influence the emotions of other dragons, similarly to dragons like the bewilderbeast or red death, but not nearly as intensely.
My idea is that Boogie Boo is actually a subspecies of hobblegrunt, slightly different to the hoblegrunts which have appeared in the second movie.
my headcannon is that the hobblegrunts in the movie are "colony" based hobblegrunts, which primarily live in large colony's of a variety of dragons, where they evolved to focus on being able to communicate with and avoid conflict with other species of dragon.
Boogie Boo's subspecies are a more independent "nomadic" based hobblegrunt, which are a bit larger and more of a threat than their cousins, and a have much bigger personality, and rather than trying to get along with other dragons, they're more likely to take advantage of them.
they're a crafty, mischievous sort, with a lot of tricks up their sleeves, common tricks being things like faking a limp in order to draw an enemy in closer, shifting their color to camouflage with their environment, or setting up fiery traps and leading their foe's into it, though they rarely, if ever, hunt other dragons for food, preferring fish, which they will often swipe from other dragons or humans.
and being fast runners, strong swimmers, and agile fliers, they're among the best dragons for making a quick getaway.
And perhaps most unique of all, is that these hobblegrunts have a pretty unique reproduction cycle.
The female nomadic hobblegrunts have a big case of wanderlust, and are almost always traveling from island to island, rarely staying for long, so to deal with this, they will often slip their egg's into the nest's of other dragons, like monstrous nightmares, which will then raise them as their own. When they have a clutch of egg's too large or there aren't any nest's to put them, they will often pair up with another local dragon as a mate to help take care of the eggs until they're able to make it on their own.
males, however, aren't as prone to wandering, so to make up for this, they have a pouch on their neck, which can be inflated much like a frog's, to create a unique sound which can be heard by other hobblegrunt's across vast distances, but can't be heard very well by humans or most other dragons. So it alert's the wandering females of their presence should they come withing range. Male's too have a tendency to pair up with other, non-wandering hobblegrunt dragons, but if it's not one of the calmer colony hobblegrunt's, with which they can often breed with, then no egg's will result from it.
a big reason as to why male and female nomadic hobblegrunt's don't just hook up with their own kind, is that these hobblegrunt's have big personality's, and are very cunning and charismatic dragons, often with a bit of a competitive streak, so they rarely get along since their big personality's often drives them into conflict with each other over small things.
but it's not all bad. they can often be very fun and playful dragons, using their cleverness and empathetic power's as a hobblegrunt to make fast friends with dragon and human alike. and while you might not necessarily have an absolutely loyal friend for life, as they very much need the care and consideration to be reciprocated and will get upset if they feel too much is being demanded of them, they can still be very empathetic, and willing to comfort or try to brighten someones day, or fight to protect its friends.
Now Boogie Boo as an individual, is a pretty silly, but clever dragon. he's a pretty good dancer since he has a talent for being able to mimic the movements of humans in a variety of way's, (often to make fun of them) and can learn some surprisingly advanced choreography. he's not much of a fighter, and doesn't care much for combat training drills with the other dragons, but usually does ok regardless thanks to his extrasensory ability's giving him an edge in reaction times. and he also isn't as good a listener to his rider as most other dragon's are, but will generally take you where you'd like to go, and if he's got some complaint, can usually make it clear what the problem is, like if he want's to eat first before leaving or something.
He likes to find things and bring them home, and it took awhile to teach him not to just go and take things from the neighbor's houses, so instead he usually looks for shells on the beach or shipwrecks to explore, and comes back from trips with saddlebags full of junk he and his rider found. he partnered up with his rider when she was at a younger age, and would often get into misadventures, them taking turns on who would get who out of a jam they got themselves into.
Boogie Boo would often get into trouble by pulling "pranks" a favorite of his being waiting patiently camouflaged into some bushes or whatever, before jumping out and making a loud noise in order to spook someone, from which he got the part of his name "Boo" from.
but now that his rider's gotten older and wiser, they get into conflict a bit more often since Boogie Boo doesn't feel like he's on as even of a playing field anymore with her taking the lead more often, while she on the other hand, often get's self conscious about having named her dragon Boogie Boo while everyone else named their dragon's kick-ass stuff like wind-shear or skull crusher, and getting played off as a joke of a dragon rider because of it (along with boogie boo often being a doof in general) but they still enjoy each other's company and work well as a team.
