So today, I broke out the colored markers. At the beginning of the year I bought a set of 48 prismacolor markers on sale at Michaels. I’ve dallied with them some, but today I was determined to really create something decent with them. First order of business though was finding a way to organize the markers so I could get to them easier. They came in these silly rounded bottom containers that don’t stand up on their own. My solution was to set them in this decorated wine box I’ve had for several years. I’ve lugged that thing through 2 moves, now I’ve finally found a use for it! So anyways this made me happy.
I pulled out the Moleskine sketch book and doodled a picture of Inga, inked it with micron pens then started coloring it with the colored markers. It turned out horrible. But I learned a lot with this mistake. So I started again. Another picture of Inga, nothing fancy, inked it with microns and colored again.
The top view is a photo of the finished piece the second one is a scan. I think I prefer the photo, the scan takes away all the texture and it looks so supersaturated. I suck at scanning.
Anyways, for those of you skilled with markers, I’m sure this sucks but I’m pleased with what I was able to do, I’ve never really played with these things at all! Maybe I’ll get brave and try something a little more complex next time.

She is beautiful as is your traditional coloring :)
I find that when I scan things I often have to turn the saturation down and then do a hue adjustment as well as brightness/contrast. It takes a lot of fiddling to get scans to look even sort of similar to the originals.

Okay, first, love the picture. I like the color-fixed version best, personally :P
Second: The rounded-bottomed boxes can stand up. You take off the top, then put it at a 90degree angle from the bottom, and snap the little plastic tabs that are on the side to the top, using the lower hole in the plastic tab. From there, you set it on the table and it leans back a little, and settles that way. :3
I only know this because my mate showed me. c_c Cause I was fiddling with it and wondering why they'd make something I couldn't stand up on end to use. XD

Lovely! I could immediately tell who she was ^___^
For the type of marker you are using that came out great! Prismacolors can be difficult to blend sometimes. A lot of people buy the 12 or 24 color set of markers and get very frustrated fast. After I tried copics the first time, it really made me appreciate that there IS a difference in quality and people weren't just being snobs.
If you are serious about learning markers, I strongly recommend slowly switching your collection over to copics. Prismacolor sets are the best way to start a collection since all the alcohol-based markers can mix together, but now that you have the basics, it would be good to start adding copic colors, you'll find you only get better with better materials. copics can do many techniques that prisma's can't, simply because they take longer to dry.

Here's a link to a blogpost I made about markers:
http://splattersandsplotches.blogsp.....-tricks-i.html
But to sum it up:
-Copics are refillable--ultimately this brings them down to less than 2 dollars a "marker full" if you buy just one refill.
-a Copic R-21 is an R-21. Doesn't seem important until you try to buy replacement colors for your prismas...it's like dye-lots of yarn: they never match. Worse is when you fall in love with a color and you can't find anything remotely like it, like
blitzava's yellow-toned eggshell marker which I'd love to steal from her--can't find anything like it.
-Copics have a longer dry time and are much easier to blend--you need less markers to blend than with prismas when blending darker colors.
-copic has a wider color range including some colors that are extremely subtle and make wonderful cloud colors.
-Everything on a copic is customizable and replacable--you can change the tips, mix the colors, etc.
-brush tips are available on the sketch and as an option for the original. These make blending a breeze once you get used to them.
Lastly: Primacolor is notorious for running out of ink on one end of the marker (the detail end) and not the other. Worse, because they seem to be separate wells of ink, it's not uncommon to have a marker in which it's ends don't match in color. The result is that most old-hands will tell you that only use the detail end of a prisma if you *absolutely need to.* What use is that?
