Roy scrambled about inside the glass jar, trying to scale its sheer surface from where he rested on the nightstand. The great saurian who’d taken him hostage rested on the bed beside him, propped up on the headboard as he read a book in a language Roy could not decipher. It was an unusual place he’d been taken; a massive, futuristic construct clearly from some advanced space-port the likes of which Roy could only dream. He might’ve given anything to sneak aboard a place like this for a time, but this wasn’t what he’d imagined. Instead he was left inside the huge jar, apparently having been designed to hold small micros like him, judging by the holes in its lids and its apparent imperviousness to any tricks he tried.
Walls too slick to climb, weight too low to knock over, top just barely out of reach… It was no use. He’d even tried going invisible, but the macro hadn’t fallen for it. Roy growled. “Oi! Big guy! Let me go!”
Grim turned a page, apparently ignoring the chameleon, but Roy caught sight of a smile tugging at the edges of his lips. The chameleon whined, turning an angry red.
“Oh come on, it’s not that bad,” Grim commented.
“Oh reeeaaally?” Roy replied, rolling his eyes like only a chameleon could. “Says you. You’ve got a book to read, at least. Here I am just sitting here and looking pretty.” He sent a short wave of iridescent blue spilling over his scales to punctuate his final comment as he turned away from the huge macro. Truth be told, just looking about the room was at least a little entertaining. But that was like marvelling at a well-crafted cake when you were hungry. He should’ve never let himself get caught. Surely there was something he could’ve done to get away before.
The glass fogged a bit and Roy tilted his head, blinking. Confused, he turned around again to see if Grim had noticed and immediately jumped back, yelping. The saurian’s huge face was inches from the glass, breath huffing out and fogging over the glass.
“Do that again,” he said to Roy’s confusion. When Roy just stared blankly the macro just snorted and grabbed the jar, tumbling Roy about with a yelp. “Come on,” he said, unscrewing the top, “Do that color thing. Rekkie never does it for me.”
Unsure who Rekkie even was, Roy found himself tumbling haphazardly out onto the saurian’s palm in moments. Collecting himself, he flinched as the sharp claws angled in towards him. “A-alright! Cool, I can do that! It’ll be fun, yeah?” he said, turning towards the saurian and letting his scales gloss over with shimmering blue, as if sprinkled with sapphire dust. The saurian peered closer, as if entranced.
Breath rising as adrenaline began to flood Roy’s system in preparation, he discreetly looked about, swaying from side to side and flicking his tail about, slowly shifting between hues. With the saurian thoroughly distracted by Roy’s small party trick, he let himself scan about for possible escapes. The door had no crawlspace to get under it. The walls seemed extremely well-maintained without so much as a crack, let alone a mousehole. The door to the bathroom was open, but would there be an escape in there? Same for the closet, but that was about as likely as there being a way out of the jaw that didn’t involve learning to snake-charm a dinosaur. He frowned and turned back to the saurian as he felt a finger brush over his scales.
“That’s amazing,” Grim said and Roy smirked.
“Yeah, yeah,” he replied. “You said it. And it’s pretty useful, too.”
“Is it?” Grim asked, and Roy nodded.
“Yep. Excellent distraction for when you’re gonna pull something like this.”
Grim stiffened and clenched his fist shut, but it was too late. The chameleon lept off, vanishing from view. Immediately the ceratosaurus snarled, reaching for the blur of motion jumping off the bed. Springing up, he landed with an earth-quaking thump a moment after Roy, leaving the chameleon stumbling before he could dash off. Several thousand pounds of bone, muscle, and scale roared and swiped for where the lizard had been standing mere moments before, intent on capturing him. But with Roy knocked down the hand flew by overhead, the wind from its passage rolling the chameleon over.
Before Grim could get another chance, Roy dashed under the bed, doing his best to keep his camo rolling. It didn’t work well though at such high speeds as Grim pushed his way under as well, the bed seeming as light as styrofoam to the saurian. Another claw barrelled down, slamming into the ground beside the disguised reptile and herding him towards the corner. Roy snorted in annoyance. As if he’d fall for that.
Instead, he pulled a 180 and dashed back for the dinosaur. Running head-on at the guy hadn’t worked before, but he had the feeling Grim had been expecting it. This time the saurian was angry, could hardly see him, and was already expecting the micro to be corralled into the corner.
A huge knee smashed into the ground, sending tremors through it, but Roy just dashed out between Grim’s legs and under the nightstand. By the time the macro had turned around and was scanning the room, Roy was out of sight.
“Roy. Get back here. Don’t make me look for you. The ship’s not safe for you.”
Roy suppressed a growl and slowly backed up. Like he’d actually come back outside after all that. Roy watched the feet thoom about as the saurian stalked about. But as he began to sniff, Roy gulped. He’d forgotten the ceratosaurus could do that. He backed up and turned to the wall, deciding to run along them to avoid getting accidentally stepped on. And then he stopped. There, as if sent from heaven, was a vent.
The nightstand shifted as Grim growled impatiently and Roy took that as his cue to leave. Zipping forwards, he wriggled between the grates and took off down the long passage, leaving the dinosaur far behind in no time.
The interior of the vent system, however, was long and maze-like, leaving Roy turned about in no time. Unlike the jar, the walls were easy enough to climb when he needed to move around vertically, but there weren’t too many exits. Left, right, right, left, left again, straight, the paths went on and on. It was only when he came to another vent exiting into another, this time darkened, room that he decided to take a look outside. This one seemed unoccupied for the moment.
Peering about before pushing his way through the grates, he let himself phase into the dark color of the floor to avoid detection just in case anyone were to wander through. The room itself was larger than Grim’s and seemed to have multiple exits in the darkness. Still disguised, he wandered forwards, peering about for anything useful he might obtain. Though there wasn’t anything much in the way of micro-sized weaponry, he did notice that the desk by the door might leave the door’s access panel accessible to him. And that might give him a map of the place.
Nodding silently to himself, he scurried towards the huge piece of wooden furniture, completely oblivious to the two pairs of eyes trained right on him. Climbing up the wall behind the desk it took him no time at all to pull himself through the gap between the two and out onto the wooden surface. Papers littered the area along with a giant laptop that could have been used in a micro-movie theater. He peered at it for a moment before deciding he’d better see if the access panel had a map before snooping around. But as he turned towards the door and began to march along the sound of something powering up to his side made him jump.
Micro instincts kicking in, he didn’t bother to check what it was before leaping forwards. And his instincts proved vindicated as not a split second later something smashed into the desk and bounced off like a rubbed bullet, nearly taking him with it. Shooting forwards, he saw the shadowy figure dart forwards to intercept him and immediately changed direction. Noting that they were standing, he zipped between the back of the table and the wall once again, intending to gain a few seconds of a head start as they had to crouch and crawl to get at him there. But with a yelp, his eyes locked onto a second macro laying in wait below, grinning wide with hands already outstretched to snatch him out of the air. Too late, he realized he’d been herded.
With the speed of a striking viper, the closer hand blurred forwards and Roy found himself suddenly clenched tight in a fist, scales on all sides. He shouted and pushed out on the fingers, but it was already too late. Laughter flooded his ears as he swung about, unsure of what the macro holding him was doing, but he heard a switch flick and light streamed through between the gaps in the macro’s fingers.
“Got him,” said the macro.
“Good,” said the other, “He was fast.”
The one holding Roy snorted and opened his palms, leaving Roy to blink at the bright light as his eyes adjusted. But the claw behind him quickly twirled his tail around it before pinching the end between two fingers, ensuring Roy couldn’t just jump off. The other macro- the one that had tried to shoot him, it seemed- padded up and grinned down.
“Well, he’s not a gecko,” he said. “I thought he was.”
The other scoffed. “Geckos don’t change color. My guess is chameleon.”
Roy didn’t know what to say, instead opting to remain silent as the one holding him raised him up to sniff before speaking again. “So hello, Mr. Chameleon. What’re you doing on board our ship?”
Roy eyed the aquamarine macro warily before replying truthfully. “Trying to get off it. And I’m Roy, not Mr. Chameleon.”
The macro holding him chuckled. “Well I’m Shock, and this is my twin brother, Awe. We’re allosauruses, in case you couldn’t tell.” Roy stared blankly for a moment, wondering who named them when a prod against his side snapped him out of his thoughts. He turned to find the other macro- Awe- poking at him roughly.
“Hmm. You’re rather small, aren’t you?” he asked, ignoring Roy’s attempts to bat away his finger.
“Am not!” Roy snapped angrily, growling. Awe barked in laughter, pushing Roy onto his back on his brother’s palm and pressing him down with a finger.
“Look, Shock, he’s growling!”
Peering at his brother, Awe didn’t seem to notice Roy biting his finger.
Shock snickered. “He certainly does seem to think he’s pretty tough, doesn't he, Awe?”
Awe nodded, pulling back his finger and leaving Roy in a huff. “Yep,” he agreed simply. “Maybe we should show him the way out.”
Shock made a face as one of those rare moments where they disagreed popped up. “I dunno, I kinda like the idea of having a micro around to mess with.”
The green saurian tilted his head, thinking. “We’ll can't keep him forever though, can we?”
Shock shook his head. “Don't need to to have fun for a while. And I can think of a few fun things we can try.”
As if their minds clicked back into sync, the two saurians grinned down at their little captive once more. Roy gulped nervously under their gazes and the thought of what might be going through their minds right then.
“I-I, uh. I like the idea of letting me go,” he stuttered.
The fingers holding his tail in place released him as Shock hefted him slowly in place. “You're not part of the crew,” he said. “You're a stowaway. I don't think you get a vote. What about you, Awe?”
Awe crossed his arms and shook his head. “Nope. Stowaways don't get a say.”
Roy growled again as the Shock’s hefting grew steadily stronger, nearly bouncing him in place. “I'm not a stowaway! I don't- oof! I don't even want to be here; let me go!” he huffed. Then, snapping at the blue allosaurus, “And would you stop that?!”
Shock snorted in amusement, eyes half-lidded above half a smirk. “Or what, Mr. Chameleon?”
Roy opened his mouth to speak but only a bark of surprise emerged as the hand flipped him lightly into the air, tail slipping free from the fingers that had held it fast up until that point. For a moment the world seemed to turn around him until he landed back down on the scaly palm on his shoulder. What might have been a painful landing for a macro left him no worse for wear, but that didn't stop the allosaurus from tossing him skyward again.
“Wh-what're you doing?!” Roy squeaked, throat clenching around his words and limbs pinwheeling in an attempt to grab onto something.
“What?” Shock asked in mock puzzlement. “This? I'm just tossing you around a bit. Nothing wrong with that, right, Awe?”
Roy thought he caught sight of a sharp-toothed smile from the green saurian before a hand snatched him out of the air not a split second before he landed back down on Shock’s palm once again.
“Of course there’s something wrong with that. Between the two of us I should get to play with the micro.”
Awe tossed the chameleon from hand to hand, ignoring the tiny barks of protest. Shock growled, though his smile did not waver.
“Now now, you know I'm older. That means I get first dibs on everything.”
Awe frowned, nimbly maneuvering Roy out of the way of a snatch from Shock. “We hatched from the same egg; one of us can’t be older.”
“So?” Shock asked looping his tail over Awe’s arms and pulling them away from the flying chameleon and plucking Roy out of the air. “Shock comes before awe; everybody knows that!”
Roy whined, feeling dizzy. “Please stop. I feel nauseous.”
Sniffing quizzically, Shock huffed. “You smell fine.”
Awe, however, took the opportunity to tackle his distracted sibling, sending Roy tumbling. Hitting the ground between the two allosauruses, he gaped up as they hissed at one another. But then their attention turned back towards him.
“Alright, whoever can hold on to him for thirty seconds gets to keep him, deal?” Shock asked. Roy scrambled to his feet just as the two grinned down at him once again.
“Deal,” Awe replied, and the two broke out into a flurry of movement.
Roy had never seen macros move that nimbly, the speed and precision of motion previously having only been available to micros and smaller animals in Roy’s mind. But the two macros practically darted about and before Roy could register what was happening, Awe had his feet planted in Shock’s stomach, shoving him towards the double-decker bed. Then he was down on hands and feet, reaching for Roy.
But Roy had had enough time to recover and as the claws stretched out to grab for him and he leapt over them with careful agility to land on the wrist behind. As agile as the two were, even amongst micros Roy tended to have a decent degree of agility. Dashing up the large forearm, Roy sprung off the elbow to avoid the other hand. The macro twisted in place to follow him, but then Shock zipped around his brother, clawed fingers zooming along the ground faster than Roy could follow. He vaulted into the air but the fingers followed, plucking him around his middle between thumb and forefinger.
“Got him!” Shock exclaimed happily, but then Awe leaned over and slammed his brother’s arm into the ground. Shock fumbled and Roy slipped between his fingers, jumping off his palm and towards the table once again. Shock growled at his brother and swept his tail towards the chameleon, hoping to knock him back. Roy just hopped over the thick appendage as the two tried to disentangle from each other.
But at the apex of his leap a huge green sole with dangerous-looking claws smashed into his side, sending him flying into the wall. Sliding down it he landed on his feet, shaking his head, but the two were already back on their feet, rushing to either side of him in a pincer movement. Weren’t they supposed to be working against each other?!
He growled and let his scales meld into the background, jolting forwards under the blue saurian, catching him off guard. Grunting in surprise, Shock reached for where Roy had fallen against the wall, but the quick chameleon was already scrambling between the allosaurus’s legs and under the swishing tail. Making a beeline for the vent he grinned. They couldn’t see him now and he had a clear short for his escape route.
Then a stream of yellow liquid sailed through the air overhead, splashing against the vent and sizzling against the metal. Roy yelped and skidded to a stop, the substance smelling of danger and deadly vipers. Had one of them anticipated his movements? But, turning, he felt himself wilt at the sight of the smirking green saurian, fangs curling back into his mouth as his gaze practically pinned the chameleon in place. Somehow, he could see Roy.
Glancing between his brother and the apparently undetectable Roy, Shock threw himself forwards with a roar. Roy yelped, accidentally sending streaks of yellow down his scales in surprise. Shock’s eyes locked on and his hand shot forwards, but Roy shot around it, dashing under the huge arm and down the side of the dinosaur as he twisted about. Shock growled, tail thrashing, but Roy was already dashing away. Then something dreadful settled in the pit of his stomach as he realized he’d lost track of Awe.
He didn’t have long to ponder, though, as a moment later something huge, hot, and heavy slammed into him from above, oppressively holding him to the ground. Roy snarled and struggled, but could hardly move a limb as the heat soaked in. Awe snickered on top of him, tapping his toes around the chameleon’s tail as Shock growled and got to his feet.
“Off the chameleon, Awe, he’s mine!” the blue saurian growled. Awe crossed his arms and cocked his head in reply.
Lunging at his twin, Shock twisted around the foot that kicked out to meet him and tackled Awe to the ground, leaving Roy gasping for breath by their feet, free again. He scrambled up, wincing lightly, but Shock shoved the still-recovering Awe under the bed and turned towards the frightened chameleon.
Roy didn’t stand a chance. With his brother too far away to stop him, Shock’s tail whipped out, knocking Roy’s limbs out from underneath him before flicking him skyward. The chameleon yelped in fear, twisting about in the air to catch sight of the huge foot hurtling towards him just before it bounced him far more delicately than he’d anticipated back up. He somersaulted once, then twice before maneuvering himself to look downwards once again.
Purple weaved its way over his scales as Shock opened his jaws wide under the chameleon. Awe was just scrambling out from under the bed and wouldn’t be able to save Roy in time. He plummeted, limbs outstretched to grab on to anything that might stop his fall despite being in open air. The maw rushed forwards, Roy bounced off the back of the tongue, and Shock swallowed, quick and efficient.
Inside the allosaurus, Roy slipped down into the large gut still fighting. But the walls were too slick, leaving him floundering down. He growled and kicked and the stomach erupted into movement, tossing the poor chameleon like a salad. Roy squeaked and tumbled as the twin titans tussled, rolling over one another.
“That’s cheating!” Awe complained, trying to pin his brother down. Shock just barked a laugh.
“Says who? I caught him, didn’t I?”
Bringing his feet up into Awe’s belly, Shock shoved him off once again, separating the two. They got to their feet, one smirking and the other glaring, but Awe seemed to concede. Barely.
Shock patted his stomach, peering down. “So then, little guy, you liking our fun?”
Catching his breath at the bottom of the belly, Roy growled up at the voice and tried to ignore the potent gurgle from below. “What do you think?” Shock snickered as Awe approached, leaning down to peer at where he supposed the micro must have been.
“Hmm. I can just barely hear him. How’s he feel in there?” Awe asked, curiously prodding his twin’s belly. Roy growled and wriggled about, trying to right himself inside. Shock just purred.
“Feels kinda nice, actually. We should eat micros more often.”
Roy huffed. “Like heck you should! I’m not gonna be the spark that sets off some macro-hunting expedition just so you all can get your kicks!”
Awe chuckled, standing back up. “Like you could stop us.”
“We ain’t gonna, though, relax,” Shock continued. “Stowaways are a special case.”
Roy growled once again, trying to climb his way back up to the top of the gut, but the fleshy walls were still too slick. “Like I said,” Roy fumed, anger rising, “I’m not a stowaway! I was brought on this ship!”
Shock and Awe exchanged glances. “You think Dread brought him on board?”
Awe shrugged. “Beats me. He might bring an injured micro on board if he thinks the injury’s bad enough. Hey! Micro! Was it Dread that brought you on board?”
Roy crossed his arms, glaring in the general direction of the voice. “No. Grim. The ceratosaurus.
Shock snorted, chuckling. “I think we know our own brother’s species.”
“Adoptive brother,” Awe clarified, and Shock nodded. Roy just continued to fume in the growling gut. “You think we should take him back? Grim’s probably looking for him.”
Shock sat and leaned back on his bed, shrugging his shoulders. “I think I’ll just send him a message. If he leaves his micros wandering around his ship he can come find them himself.”
Awe nodded again. “True. And, of course, if it takes him a while to do so, well, all the more time to have some fun with our new pal, eh, Roy?”
Roy growled. “I’m not your pal, buddy.” The two macros laughed uproariously for some reason, jostling the small reptile around.
“Sure you’re not,” Shock replied. “But we’re still gonna have our fun!”
Roy gave the saurian a kick that he didn’t seem to notice, something nagging at the back of his mind. Peering curiously upwards, he hesitated before speaking. “I have a question, though. My camo didn’t look like it worked for Awe, and he also shot poison or something across the room. Since when can allosauruses do that, anyhow?”
“Well,” Shock said, taking on the tone of a teacher addressing a student, “First off, it’s venom, not poison. But more importantly, none of us are pure saurians. Each of us have a bit of genetic coding spliced in from various other species as well as some unique coding of our own.”
“Shock here has a bit of scorpion and porcupine in him,” Awe continued. “I’ve got fierce snake and fer de lance. Both deadly, both poisonous. And one of them a pit viper, which means those little color-changing tricks won’t work on me.” He grinned.
Roy growled, a red sheen creeping up his scales. He hated pit vipers. Thankfully he’d never met one before, but the idea of anything that could see past his color change so easily always irked him. His brooding, however, was interrupted by the sound of gulping from further up above. He felt a bit of apprehensive worry settle into his gut before his fears were realized as a shower of cold water gushed into the stomach in spurts, showering over him and pooling at the bottom of the gut. He yelped and wriggled and Shock paused to purr.
“Still feels nice to have you wriggle around in there, Mr. Chameleon.”
Roy growled, for once wishing he were back with Grim.
