My thoughts would be, using colored sculpy rather then painting
Like this< It allows you to focus on the cute critter shapes and you get a clean look in the end. Your sculpt style would do perfect using colored clay. <3 looks very good already.

i've done those in the past too. They're just extremely time consuming and I have a hard time getting things to look clean like the link provided ;-;
