In Velkaden's defense the sketchy plane in the distance could be interpreted as a monoplane bomber with the enclosed airframe. That (and the implied number of bombs dropped) would be anachronistic for a literal WWI scene. If you're not familiar with details like the Brodie helmet or the Winchester 1897, the overall impression of the scene could encompass many 20th century conflicts. Consider that for a certain generation the most iconic image of a bomber dropping a large stick is the Vietnam era B-52.
