I realize those weren’t Sans’ exact words, but that’s how Frisk chose to interpret them. He was right, though: the worst person can change, and there was good in her.
Anyway, there we have it. The reason Frisk is so obsessive about protecting the monsters now is because she aborted a genocide run at the last minute. This is also why she’s kind of protective of Asgore specifically: like him, she’s seeking unity between humans and monsters as penance for past actions. It’s not a new or revolutionary idea to this fandom by any means, but still important to establish, I think. At least Chara didn’t get her soul.
I really, really bounced back and forth on whether or not I wanted to include a genocide run for a lot of reasons, even though Flowey and Gerson’s quotes on the very first page of The Ambassador are only available then. Initially I was hesitant on establishing anything about Frisk, but the longer I go on with this comic and chat with you guys, the more I realize she’s going to have to be her own character – and thank you for the encouragement to that end. I feel her actions make more sense this way, and I feel it’s more in line with this chapter’s theme of, “nobody in Undertale is innocent”. (Which is probably a giant understatement in the case of a genocide run, but…)
I suppose Frisk’s innocence could be debated depending on whether or not Chara was the one in control, and I do hope to explore that at some point. That’s like chapter 4-5 territory, though.
Anyway! :P Thank you everyone for your patience last week -- I got sick, hence the lack of an update. My flu is dead and I’m not, thankfully. I’m feeling much better and we’re definitely back in business. Enjoy your week, and as always, stay awesome!
