You asked for tips... everyone's got their own style, so it's kindof hard to offer advice without watching you work.
I personally make geometric shapes (ropes, eggs, balls, etc.) and squish them together, using a number 2 pencil or other round stick-like object to help beld and smooth out seams. Well, that's my basic approach. I experiment a lot with every new one I do :)
