Endless Realms bestiary - Gibbering Horror
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
Oh, the Horror! The HORROR!! A behemoth of hatred incarnate! What manner of creature is that? A ton of flesh and sinew wielding muscles thick as ropes strung onto claws that could crush stone and sever metal as though it were threshed wheat. Crushing, cutting..The walls shook with each step it took! Oh, the HORROR!! An abomination... Its physiology remarkable abstract... no real organs or anything... It shouldn't work, but it did!! And the mouths... those gnashing scythes of teeth - I tell you, it existed ONLY to EAT!! To consume! To gnaw! To bite! To DEVOUR!!
- Maximillian Roivas, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
Some more dream realm creatures as requested by my art director, who gave me free reign to come up with some additional concepts - my take on a classic concept :b Perhaps they are formed from those who have suffered a violent death while dreaming or had their minds consumed by nightmares - naturally, they end up perpetuating the cycle ;P

*chuckles* I don't blame you :b It's more I think I realised I appreciate body horror and that sort of thing because it specifically is horrifiying for the way it contrasts with the norm and with beauty, and I guess I find it interesting in an academic sort of way. It's also kinda fun drawing gross/scary things sometimes, just for something different, in the same way it can be fun to get really filthy once in a while - once you sort of let go of the unpleasantness, it's a different experience. ALSO, stuff like this doesn't really follow anatomical rules in the same way, so it's sort of artistically liberating to be able to just make some ridiculous thing up.
Hmm, wondering if you were expecting such a serious response or not now :V Oh well, here you go!

You're right.... I wasn't expecting a serious response
That was interesting what you said about freeing yourself from anatomical rules though. I really do get that. When designing my creature, I contemplated and researched the hell out of every feature, every aspect, making sure she remained 100% viable. If I ever design another species, I'm probably just gonna say F-it, and use whatever I might evolve in any of thousands of alternate realities, or maybe other planets. That includes making fur what ever color I fancy. Pink, purple, and blue? Sure, why not.
I'm glad you're having fun breaking from the tedium of biology for a while!

XD I think I've only had one or two nightmares like that where it's just been horrible horrible nope-land :b One was a creepy hospital with a little girl who got slowly decapitated by an elevator @_@ The other was admittedly sorta bad-ass cool but scary at the time - basically a big blood red moon rose, and it shattered and a bunch of Lovecraftian horrors came out and started slaughtering everyone o_O What sucked is I had those dreams back to back, so I was so sleep-deprived and weirded out the next day x_x
Yeah. I actually have a lot of "nightmarish" dreams that I actually enjoy quite a bit :b On the other hand, I also have a lot of mundane dreams that stress me out a ton XD Y'know, like the classic, "Late for your final exams what I didn't think I had school anymore fuck I don't remember any of this auugh!"
Actually, to be fair, I've played Silent Hill 1, but not 2, since PS2 era games don't run well on my laptop emulator and our actual PS2 is in storage overseas :b My favourite horror game is Eternal Darkness because I really enjoy the psychological meta-mindfuckery, although the game that's made me the most freaked out is Amnesia :b
Yessss - did you ever play Half Life 2? The head crabs used to terrify me (even though I also thought they were adorable when they weren't trying to attach themselves to your face :b), and worse were the head crab zombies, where you could hear the tortured person screaming inside, even as the parasite was driving them to attack you.
Oh body horror :b
Oh body horror :b
Adventurer 1: what ever you do.. don't.. look.. into.. it's eye
adventurer 2: um.. which one?
A1: right, any of them, so.. don't look at it... directly.
All joking aside. awesome creature, and I love that you quoted my favorite horror game on the gamecube. I even read it in Roivus' voice.

Indeed, too bad the developers did some shitty stuff and got themselves dissolved making it so a second game will never happen.
also.. to this day I tend to still randomly blurt out (usually with some reason that makes it not entirely seem crazy) "may the rats eat your eyes!" or "the darkness. the darkness comes!" or even "you too will know fear, as I do"
