This is the second piece in my "Devil's Dictionary" homage to the months of the year.
I’ve often felt that February is the most cynical and treacherous of the months. Being that it’s the shortest one, maybe you can put that down to the proverbial Napoleon Complex. Just like the alternate reality that was captured in the 1993 movie ‘Groundhog Day’, nothing is quite as it seems, whether that be odd farces involving large rodents incorrectly ‘predicting’ the early return of spring, or the even more disingenuous farce where Retail Therapy® somehow equals ‘love’.
And since so much of the marketing for that particular day of infamy (especially by those marketing diamonds and other jewellery), is little more than innuendo, I figured that I may as well go with the flow, as it were...
The baby’s arm holding an apple, the turtle head pokes out of its shell, and most of all, as ZZ Top suggested, sometimes the only gift you can afford is a pearl necklace.
