Well where to begin on this one...
Okay I'm not terribly happy with the way his ax turned out. However I remind myself that I've been a shoujo artist, almost exclusively, for the last two decades and I'm just now starting to draw a race of fantasy creatures that are basically masculinity personified and well... I can give myself some slack.
I am however happy with this pose, and I'd like to believe I'm improving in my coloring techniques.
I've realized that I've been drawing my orcs in more "fluffy" situations, which is to be expected since it's a romance, but I can't forget that they are... well, orcs. They are violent, ill-tempered, and cold warriors. They kill without mercy, and take few prisoners.
So about Vargan. I decided it was time I revealed a little bit more about him. He is known as the "Orc King," but admits that he's really more of a chieftain. Either way he is the proud leader of the orcs of South Keep (name under revision) -the orc city. He is respected, loved and honored by his people, and leads with fierce integrity. In his youth, however, he had been an irresponsible, reckless playboy, much to his father's disgust. He seemed far more concerned with picking fights, and bedding every woman in the city, than in learning to become the next orc leader.
Meanwhile Vargan's little brother, Grushnag, seemed more interested in studying war tactics than actually executing them. Their father would often say in exasperation: "If I merged the two of you I might actually have a son worthy of my succession..." Vargan used to tease Grushnag mercilessly about him being a bookworm, but he'd never let any other orc pick on him.
However the death of their father, and mother soon after, devastated Vargan and he realized he needed to grow-up, and fast. Nearly overnight he learned to be responsible, and has spent every waking moment since their death training himself to be a disciplined and righteous leader.
