The swamplands around the city of Nef'Rel are a vicious, brutal wilderness full of monstrous creatures and roaming undead. Of all the beasts that call those swampy wilds home the most agreeable, oddly enough, is also one of the most aggressive...Should you be Undead.
Necrophages are a form of pseudo-mammal, showing traits of both mammals and reptiles. Their unusual anatomy includes Crocodile-like scutes, nictating membranes to protect their eyes, and scaled hides, while also having distinctly canine skeletal anatomy and warm blood. They are robust, durable predators capable of hunting creatures several times their own size (and given that an adult Necrophage can get as large as an English Mastiff, that's quite large,) and are known for their toughness and seemingly limitless reserves of energy.
Normally seen to hunt in packs, Necrophages can also be found as solitary hunters from time to time. They live in burrow-like dens that they drag their preferred prey, Zombies, back to for ease of storage and consumption. They are more commonly found to consume discarded bones and dead bodies rather than hunt, but that is simply a matter of preference. They can and will hunt and destroy any Undead that they can when they grow hungry enough, and in some cases do so simply for sport.
They are considered the "Chosen" animals of Xedoin, God of the Dead and Shepherd of the Afterlife. Those who defile his charges, I.E. Necromancers who do not follow the laws and rituals of the art or raise mindless thralls with no consideration for their care, are liable to find themselves brought low under the claws and fangs of a pack of summoned, shadowy Necrophages.
One particular odd trait about Necrophages is that they will very rarely be born with two heads and two tails. The two-headed variety is actually more mellow and even tempered than the norm, and are highly sought after pets in the Fallen City of Nef'Rel due to their good temper and affectionate nature. The sentient Undead of Nef'Rel are far safer from the Necrophaes than the feral hordes beyond the towering black walls, though there are still incidents involving trade caravans getting mired in the bog and finding themselves under assault by packs of the powerful hunters.
