Jaspersphinx
Like the Androsphinx and Gynosphinx of Egyptian and Greek mythology, the Jaspersphinx has a human-like face and intelligence and an animal-like frame. Unlike its Greek counterpart, it has no wings, and unlike both, it's body is long, appearing to be a hybrid between lion and dragon instead of lion alone. They stand around 3 and a half feet tall at the shoulder, and about 5 feet tall at the head, and are around 12 to 13 feet long from shoulder to tail, though sizes vary from average.
Like its Egyptian counterpart, the Jaspersphinx's main purpose is to serve as a guardian. Being more of a spiritual being than a natural one, they can be summoned to guard a specific place or item by a powerful binding spell. This is usually against the sphinx's will, but the nature of the spell forbids it to attack the person who bound it; its new 'master'. While many Jaspersphinx are of 'nuetral' alignment when it comes to temperment, their personalities vary. What does not vary is their magically driven duty to protect what they are bound to. Even a kinder soul will turn fierce when its duty is tested. Jaspersphinx are immortal and extremely hard to kill. The only non-magical way to free a sphinx from its binding is to bring it to the point of death, then revive it.
Jasperphinx come in a variety of colors that don't appear genetically connected to one another. Males have thick manes of fur around their heads and neck while females have thick fur only around their heads. Each sphinx is born with brightly colored markings on its face and nails. When a Jasperphinx is bound, these markings will glow with magical energy. Sphinx have a variety of magical abilities that help them not only defend themselves, but their treasures. Nearly all have some telekinetic and telepathic control as well as the ability to make themselves invisible. Others have control over the manipulation of different types of elements and energies. They have these powers regardless of if they are bound or not, though in binding, these abilities are amplified.
The Jaspersphinx is an open species. Feel free to create your own and use the mythos, as long as you give me credit for the original idea.
