In a world where chaos gemstones are a source of terrifying power, geomancy is an entirely overpowered skill to have. Very early on, it was known that whoever was going to be carefully trained in the art, the would have to be a careful choice. Someone they could be sure would carry raw compassion, in the off chance they ever could get access to a chaos gem. But who could be trusted with such a task.
The answer came in the form of the son of a wealthy Slavic couple. Cypress, the Goat. Despite being born into opulence, Cypress bled empathy. His compassion for the world around him was immense, yet not nearly as intense as his powers. Birthright made him capable of controlling gemstones, but in amounts far greater than anyone could expect from his age. And training went well the moment he was sent away. Not only did his powers grow, but so did his love. As childhood turned to adulthood, his passion for the people around him never faded. He cared for the other elemental ninjas, he took a man as his lover, he was happy.
But not all people bled this same kind of love. No one knows quite who it was. Some rumors say it was a Scourge, some a Finitevus, and many claim it was something darker still. But a creature came to Cypress one day, with a temptation for the protigy. 'Anarchy Beryl,' it was called. 'Have you ever wished to know how true power felt? What powers could be unlocked with true Chaos energy flowing through your body?" Their plan was simple to see if he could control that kind of raw power, and if his powers over crystals could at all fuel it. If he could have been useful for their dark purposes.
But that wasn't the case. The dark energy of the Anarchy Beryl tapped into his connection with crystals in a horrifying parasitic clutch. The power fed the few crystals he wore as decoration and they sunk into his flesh. Major parts of his body turned to crystal in a few moments, and the anarchy beryl merged as one with Cypress's body and mind. The surging power would seep into his brain and take over all control.
The stories of a man who was a living puppet for a chaos gem turned into a simple name for the beast - Beryl the Glutton. The creature sunders around the world, with little regard for it's host body, consuming gems and crystals to feed the energy's natural desire for a crystal to inhibit. It lacks the mind or power to truly access any kind of chaos gem, but it years for that power. For the power to turn it's host into a supernatural beast, and join the energy into one supernatural beast. It's a feral monster, clawing at anything that moves and using it's power over crystals to attack any living creature that deigns to come close to him. The dark powers had turned him into a gluttonous, vengeful monster.
Yet rumors say at the heart of this beast is the real mind of Cypress. Silently watching his body destroy everything and begging to be released. Even if those few moments of life he could live with a chest full of crystals would be agonizing and brief, he simple wishes to say goodbye to his old lover and make things right...
My second entry for DA user MobianScrollkeeper's elemental ninja design contest. HOO BOY DID THIS TURN OUT MORE MESSED UP THAN I'D HOPED, but you know? It's an interesting kind of messed up that has a great deal of potential world building and conflict behind it. I'm real happy with how this dude turned out, and I'm looking forward to seeing all the other entries!
