Oh, Ethan. He does seem rather naive at this point. Or maybe just way too optimistic. I think I'd be much more inclined to be wary of people who just stepped out in front of my wagon like that, especially the middle of the wilderness. But then I, or at least my characters, are used to a world where banditry is rife. It's just lucky he proves to be right about both of these ladies! Besides, maybe it's just Ermine's style, but Lydia looks very sweet and friendly for someone with a mouthful of big, sharp teeth!
While Ethan is more worldly than he appears at this point he is generally a good judge of character. While it may exasperate Rhodes that he isn't a bit more hesitant about being good natured most of the time he's right.
