More closeups from the comic, I'm afraid.
This time it's a peek into Daryil's Clan about a thousand years earlier. Most of the characters we know and love haven't been born yet, but you can see some of their ancestors, including Josef Svensohn who met an unfortunate end as shown in 'Heads you lose'.
For that matter, most of the people here met an unfortunate end - I think there's only about three of them who are verifiably alive and kicking. Furrae can be a nasty and brutal world, especially if you have wings on your head.
This was drawn and coloured by
merlin-the-bruce, though I have done some colour correction since the trees were strangely washed out in the original.

"...I am not making these decisions lightly. I am making them because I can smell the winds of change on the horizon. Right now, many of us treat Beings like a disposable resource to be used up and then destroyed. That can't continue forever.
"Beings are already growing more powerful and they will only continue to do so. mark my words, some day within our own lifespans, they will Organize, and when that happens, a lot of Creatures are going to have to choose which side they are on.
"I think that the winning side is going to be the Beings, so I want us to be on that side too, whether they call us their allies or regard us as harmless cranks..."

Marina Daryil looks like this: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/22616349/
...there is someone of similar colouring on the left, but with different wings and hair so I take them to be Marina's ancestor.
Merlin did most of the character design on this page - in fact, of the characters I actually specced, Edwin and the Prof were missing and had to be dropped in afterwards.

Yeah, I reached that conclusion about Marina already: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/228.....#cid:117178047
I guess that explains why you can only see their heads. Thanks for reminding me of Edwin's name. I referred to his relation to Illiath to avoid butchering the name à la Brian Blessed.

I love this shot so much. I can definitely pick out Lady Finch's ancestor, the Professor himself, Nigel's ancestor, Illiath's dad, Jakob's grand dad, Falkirk's ancestor... and apparently an ancestor of Marina too, which I love a lot, hahaha.
For all the others I don't recognize... I like those twin bunnies a lot! Nice symmetrical designs :D. Also can't help but notice that back in the day, the wing colors of Daryil's clan were much more colorful.

Yeah, he mentions Josef by name and fate in the description. Falkirk's ancestor, you say? Is that who that guy with the red bowl cut is? Next to who I'm gonna call Finchy?
I'm with you on the rabbit twins. And yes, there does seem a lot of colour there. I'm surprised Daryil didn't keep it that way.

I'm really happy how that cell turned out, and those rabbits might be my new faves, mwaha.
I decided on a different sort of forest this time, since I usually do something sort of generic, I thought this time I'd base it off the sort of eucalypt forests around my grandfather's old property in the southern highlands. Then I got to draw weird woobly gum tree branches (though the leaves did end up a bit too floofy). Although there is a lot of variation in gum tree bark - particularly striking are the ones that are rough-barked and entirely black - the most common ones in forests around those parts have extremely pale trunks, ranging from grey to white.

I tend to instinctively associate grey-&-red wings with Clan Siar, so looking at a few of these characters makes me wonder about their heritage :P I think my favorite designs here are the twins, and it seems they disagree on whether this is a good direction for the clan to take or not, which makes me wonder if they both took the same path in life after the changes were announced. Also, love those pink wings on the grey canine in front.
