Another scouting mission. What was it, the tenth of the week? Oh well, I didn't really care that much about it, I loved walking around being in contact with nature, I still do! But sometimes I wonder what would have happened had I chosen another route..
I was just walking like usual, the area around base camp was mainly plain forest: no mountains nor creeks, perfect to spot whoever tried to pull a frontal assault to the rebels. Maybe the river could have been able to offer some kind of advantage, but the current went downstream so violently that any gem, aside a strong, bulky one (I'm looking at you, Quartzes) would have been forced to follow it else be poofed, or worse, shattered.
Anyway, as per usual, I kept walking. Well, more like skipping. I was excited, ok? I really liked those scouting missions! And, if I have to say the truth, I considered myself a way better scout that anyone else on camp. After all, weren't Dolomites made for that precise role? But, back on track, I was walk- eeeeh skipping. Skipping through the forest with not a care in the world aside the fact that we were fighting an actual war with actual deaths from both sides. Eh. But aaaaanyway, as I was skipping through my usual path, I heard a strange noise. I thought to myself:
"Sounds like a woodpecker, but on rock! A rockpecker?"
As I was congratulating myself on that wordplay, trying to make a mental note of referring it back to base camp to make that awfully serious Pearl smile, I neared the source of that noise.
<< Argh! Damned rocks.. >>
To my utter surprise, it turned out to be another Pink Dolomite cussing at a big boulder that, somehow, had fallen over her right leg blocking her there. She was trying to remove it with her claws, making that noise. She looked soooo pissed, you have no idea! Like, her whole face instead of dark pink was as red as a Ruby! So, I thought it would have been best to approach her in the calmest way possible.
<< HELLO THERE!! >>
...
Look, it's myself we're talking about, that's the calmest I can get.
<< Who are you?!! >>
She looked quite startled. Well, of course she didn't expect to find me there.
<< Hi! I'm Pink Dolomite, but you can call me Dolly! >>
I extended my hand to help her up, but she did not even consider it. Instead she started looking at me with an inquisitive look, almost bitter, if looks can have flavours.
<< You're a Dolomite? I thought Pink Diamond had only sent me on this mission. >>
I seriously didn't know what to answer. Then I thought, if I have to, why not with the truth?
<< Actually, I'm not under Pink Diamond. Not anymore at least. I'm with the rebels! >>
She literally went pale at my last words. I didn't know how to react, she was looking all weird and stuff! I did the only sensible thing at the moment and started digging with my own claws near her legs. As soon as I got my beauties out, sharp to impress, she covered her right arm, the ones with her gem on it.
<< Hey, don't worry! >> I reassured her << I'm not going to hurt you! Here, look! >>
I started digging and she calmed down. She was still looking at me with that strange face, but didn't make any comment. In less than fifteen minutes, there was a hole big enough to let her leg slip out from beneath the boulder.
<< See? I'm your friend! >>
I smiled brightly only to receive a hard glare in answer.
<< You're one of the rebels. >>
She stated coldly.
<< That's right! >>
<< Is your camp near here? >>
<< Of course! It's just half an hour of walking, down that path! >> I was so hopeful that, with that question, she was actually pondering to join us! << ..Oh, it's actually a secret path you know? To avoid Homeworld gems finding us, obviously. >>
<< And how do you navigate it? >>
I pointed at one of the trees.
<< Just look at the first branch. If there's a big dent in it, you're on the right path! >>
At the end of my sentence, she turned around and simply started walking away.
<< Hey, where are you going?! >>
I yelled at her, following her footsteps.
<< Back to my Diamond. She needs to know. >>
<< WAIT!! You can't do that! >>
<< Watch me. >>
I couldn't believe myself! It just downed on me that I had revealed the most convenient way of finding out base camp to our enemy! You can laugh all you want, but this ain't no laughing matter! We are talking about war and a war is never funny. Anyway, I tried to find a solution to such a dangerous problem.
<< B-but why don't you join us? >> I asked, hopeful << You could see that the rebels are much more than what you think of them! Look at me. I'm like you but I am a rebel! >>
<< And that's reason enough for me to kill you. >> She replied, not stopping her walk << Get away from me. I'm sparing your life because you helped me, but I won't hesitate to resort to extreme measures were you to push the boundaries. Now, GO! >>
She quickened her pace, I was starting to have difficulties keeping up with her. In a flash of courage I ran in front of her blocking her path.
<< What are you doing? >>
She asked me. My cheerfulness disappeared all in once.
<< We both know that I cannot let you leave. >>
She stared at me for a long moment.
<< ... so be it. >>
I did not even notice her hands turning into picks/claws until she hit me. Damn, it hurt! I can still feel it if I concentrate hard enough.. but that didn't stop me from parrying the next blow and the next one too.
<< Please, stop, we can find a way to work around this! >>
I yelled in vain. She kept jabbing and hitting and I kept parrying and shuffling trying to keep my balance under her attacks. To help my cause, I had to turn my hands in claws too, otherwise I wouldn't have had a chance! Now, every hit was slightly more bearable, but she looked like she would never be satisfied until she had me poofed, bubbled and brought to her Diamond. The only thought of returning under that Pink Monarch made me shiver.
In a pause between her attacks, I started giving her a taste of her own medicine. With all of my might, I charged my blow, claws spread out wide. "Please, let me poof you." I whispered mentally. My attack hit the target. There was a flash of bright white light. I closed my eyes and when I reopened them the other Dolomite was gone!
<< I poofed her!! >>
I screamed in joy, jumping in place. Only after that brief moment of cheerfulness, I realized I was missing something: her gem. I looked around, trying to figure out where it fell. I had to work quickly! Who knew how much it could take her to reform! I needed to bubble it immediately to avoid the worst!
I looked on the ground at my feet and found myself staring at a jumble of pink colored rocks not bigger than my hand. It took me just a moment to understand what it meant. The brief memory of her using her right arm, her gem arm, to protect herself from my attack flashed in my mind.
I did not poof her.
I shattered her.
<< NononononoNONONONONONONO!!! >>
I fell on my knees, grasping at the various shards desperately.
<< I can fix this, I c-can.. I can fix you! I'll fix you I promise!! I can.. >>
All the universe seemed to be crashing down on me. I couldn't even revert back to my normal hands and was forced to use the claws to pick up the remains of the gem, while also unwillingly digging through the ground!
<< I can fix this, I can fix you, I can... I can... >>
<< Dolly!! >>
I was shaken from my temporarily numbness by a familiar voice. I looked at my right and recognized the blurred rainbow colored figure of Bismuth, looking down on me. Blurred? Oh, yes. I was crying my eyes out. Everything looked blurred to me at that moment.
<< I s-swear, Bismuth, I.. I didn't.. She would have gone to tell the Diamonds... I just.. >>
She neared me calmly.
<< Woha, easy now.. what happened? >>
I tried to fight back the tears.
<< T-there was another Dolomite... She wanted to tell the Diamonds w-where we are... I tried.. I tried to s-stop her! She put her gem in the way, I couldn't.. I wouldn't... >>
Bismuth tensed up and started staring at my hands still in claw form. I thought she was going to kill me.. But then, suddenly, she hugged me tight, lifting me up from the ground.
<< Oh Dolly! I can't believe it! You did it! >>
<< I-I did what? >>
<< You shattered a homeworld gem!! >> She squeezed me harder. For some strange reasons she seemed euphoric << Do you know for how long I've been working on a contraption that does just that?! >>
<< A contr-what? >> I asked, but then another question arose in my mind << How d-did you know I was here? >>
But she completely disregarded me.
<< Why didn't you tell us you could shatter gems with your claws? We would have had such an advantage!! Pink Dolomite, the Shatterer of Gems! Sounds good, donit? >>
<< How did you know I was here! >>
Bismuth looked at me as if I had asked the dumbest question on earth.
<< I was wondering why you were taking so much to come back, you've been away all morning! >>
<< All morning!? >>
Had it really been that long?
<< Yes, so I went after you but, oh, I would have never thought of finding you like this! You're a hero! >> She started examining my hands. << With this kind of power in our hands, we can be unbeatable! Can you teach the other rebels? >>
I withdrew my hand from her.
<< I.. I'd rather not. Also, I think only Dolomites can do this.. >>
<< Well then! >> she uttered as she let me go on the ground << You'll just have to let me examine those things! I thought you could only use those on rock, but this! This opens a whole new realm of possibilities!! >>
<< Wait, no! >> I protested << I don't want to take part in any kind of contrap-whatever that shatters gems!! >>
<< Dolly, why are you being so insensitive? >> Bismuth went on her knees, now looking at me eye-level. << Don't you understand? With this, we could finally win this war! We could help other gems free themselves from the oppression of the Diamonds! Don't you think that the shattering of those gems is necessary? >>
<< I.. >>
I seriously didn't know how to answer. Bismuth was bringing forward a really good argument.
<< Say, >> The rainbow gem broke the silence << what if you don't have to do a thing, just show me that thing you do and then I'll do the rest. You'll only be my poetical inspiration! Well, more like, mechanical inspiration, but you get the concept. >>
I kept silent for a bit before replying.
<< Just one thing. >>
She looked at me waiting for me to continue.
<< Don't tell Rose. >>
Bismuth smiled. She ruffled my hair, getting back up on her feet.
<< Sure think, scrub! >>
And that's how I started working for Bismuth.
