I found an ENORMOUS megalodon tooth -- or most of it, anyway -- while diving in Venice, FL yesterday.
This prehistoric shark's tooth measures about four and a half inches across at the root, and, if it was intact, it would probably be seven inches long or greater. As it is, broken, it's about five and a quarter inches long... puts the meg teeth my husband and I found last year to shame! The captain of our boat, a retired geologist, thinks this is probably the largest tooth that's ever come out of Venice -- and it's the shark tooth capital of the world.
I'll post some better pictures later!

Man, that sucks! :( The first time we went on this dive, it was raining buckets (at eight o'clock in the morning... a little weird), but our captain said we'd just wait it out and go diving once the lightning stopped. He's a pretty cool guy. :)
Try booking it in early-ish spring, maybe? There's still a chance of crappy weather, of course, but it's not as likely as once hurricane season begins. Or you could try doing a shore dive, since that doesn't depend on other people... we're thinking of doing that next. I really like diving from a charter, but the folks on scubaboard.com maintain a list of the best spots to enter the water from the beach to find teeth, so that's nice, at least!

we got some tips from scubatoys.com forum members too :) when i used to have time for forums.. alas! lol
we are waiting until after some big storms to head out I think.. I've been told that's when people get some good teeth (and bones!), since obviously all the deeper stuff gets washed up
Thanks for the info! :D

Ooo, a girl after me own heart! ;D As much as hurricanes suck, Brandon and I are waiting for one to stir everything up so we can go out diving and find some goodies. When we got triple-slammed in '04, we went to Cocoa Beach immediately afterward and the amount of perfect, intact seashells on the shore was phenomenal... I can only imagine what the Venice equivalent would be! Shark teeth as far as the eye can see...
I want to find more meg teeth, of course, but there are tons of other cool bones, like you mentioned. There are so many manatee rib pieces that most people don't even pick 'em up because they're literally just lying scattered around on the Gulf's floor, but there are rarer bones, too: whale teeth (I want one of these!), whale inner-ear bones (one of those would be nice, too), whale vertebrae (I found most of one this last dive), and land-mammal fossils like horse teeth and mammoth teeth. A guy on our dive this year found a hunk of mammoth molar that was probably eight or ten inches long -- it looked really cool!
My dad's currently working on a fixer-upper boat that he got from my in-laws, and it would be perfect for diving. I'd be going out to Venice at least once a month if we had access to our own boat! Fossil-hunting is addicting, especially when it doesn't involve getting all sweaty and dusty. =)

lol, I always figure my stance on hurricanes was like finding the silver lining to a bad situation you know? ;D It brings TREASURE to the shallower waters! And besides, it DID take a hurricane to upright the Spiegel Grove.. which looks much more handsome now than it did on its side
I heard about the manatee bones! I would probably suck up all of my oxygen if I found a whale tooth, hyperventilating and gesturing like a moron :) Awesome about the vertebra though! That is still such a lucky and nifty find!
Hopefully your pa gets that boat fixed up soon. I heard Beer Can island recently has been having a fair amount of large teeth wash up.. you of course need a boat to get there :) It'd be a perfect maiden voyage if you can get a trailer over to Tampa Bay!!

Exactly! Hurricanes suck (or, more accurately, the property damage and lack of electricity do), but they help mix things up, which can be a good thing. =)
Beer Can Island, huh? Looks like the boat's going to take some time to fix (the engine block is probably cracked, but, hey, it was free! Plus, this gives Dad something to work on now that he's retired), but, once it's seaworthy, it would be very little trouble to tow it to Tampa. Thanks so much for the tip! :D
I'd like to get out soon, boat or no; I'm really missing diving right now. I used to dive several times a week for work, but I've been dry for way too long since I quit. I was researching dive resorts in Roatán, Honduras, today, and I'm surprised my laptop didn't short out from all the drool!

I wouldn't worry about the boat being a little, ah, grouchier than expected.. as you said it gets the ol' Dad figure something to do.. it seems we both understand the need to keep Dads busy with a project!
Quit the mouse eh? My issue was surgery on my foot.. kept me out of the water :) Honduras looks amazing!! I have a coworker from there, sometimes she shows me the most lovely photos of that water! She tells me great stories of sea horses she sees in the shallow there too.. apparently they are big! That would be great! My (assumed cheaper) dream dive has been over to the Socorro Islands in the Pacific.. cold water yes, but humpbacks and hammers galore! (And I figure since it's off the coast of the US it's less costly... maybe. ha!)
