After an unproductive recording session with a guitarist, I decided to stay up late at the band house to write a song. I wanted to write a song using only a guitar, a tambourine, and a multi-track system to compensate for my complete lack of guitar and tambourine skills.
However just as I started tapping on the tambourine with drum sticks, the same, but more tired, guitarist emerged from the door. I'd woken him up, which sucked, as I'd now have to stop recording.
So I did what I always do, and fucked with it on the computer (headphones are quieter than guitars). It's not a finished song, or production or whatever, but it's a fun little minute long piece of sound and it has given me allot of production ideas for once I've written the song properly (such as the stereo techniques used on the guitar).
Recorded using sE Z3300a, sE Reflexion Filter, Edirol FA-101 Audio Interface, and Ableton Live 8. Instruments used: Simon & Patrick Luthier Cutaway (Steel String Acoustic Guitar), Stagg 9" Woodern Head Tambourine, Caffeine.

NONONONONO!!!! NEVER PLAY WITH DRUM STICKS ON A TAMBOURINE!!!! i cringe at the thought of it.... always use mallets (if you cant use hands). Timpani mallets are the best but marimba mallets are acceptable as well. Of course you probably knew that but if not then cool, now you have more knowledge about safety in the percussive world!!!
I've never used Ableton before. Is it best used for plugin instruments like MIDI keyboards or is it better with live audio recordings?

Ableton Live is interesting as it is excellent at dealing with both Audio and MIDI.
And I love tambourines, I'm currently putting together a little kit made up of three tambourines, one normal as a snare, one without shakers as a tom, one without a head for the hi-hat type sound, all I need to finish it is a logarhythm or something similar to use as a kick.
And I know it damages their heads, but so does hitting a snare head with a stick, so I'm happy to replace as I love the sound :3 I'll have to try timpani mallets though, but it might not be the sound I need for the folk band I am using it in.
Thanks for checking out the other stuff :D
