It's hard not to suspect they were much more spiritual than people now. And maybe there's a kind of immortality in that... These old artful tombstones bring with them a weight of history a European may perhaps take for granted, but as an American, I've always yearned for; deep cultural roots that pop into your life tangentially because they're everywhere.
