You have obviously never seen a picture of Britannia. The Brits shows her with a shield and a trident, and wearing a helmet, ala Athena, and at times with a lion. She is the female personification of the British state, like Columbia use to be for the US, Marianne is for France, Germania for Germany, Italia for Italy, Helvetia for Switzerland, Finnish Maiden for Finland, Mother Russia for Russia, Polonia for Poland, Hispania for Spain, Efígie da República for Portugal, etc.
