Finally finished with this one! We had to do a book cover for my illustration class and I decided to do Insomnia from Stephen King (obviously). The vibrant red is for two reasons - it's SUPER eye catching, and also the antagonist behind all the shit in the book is the Crimson King, so I wanted a visual representation of him overshadowing everything. The text across his face was my teacher's suggestion and I think it works really well, though I'm slightly worried about the readability. The first iteration also had hands with a scalpel reaching for his aura (the blue shit), but my teacher suggested removing them for a less literal image.

I had no problem reading the title, but I really couldn't see his eyes/expression until I zoomed in.
It'd probably look a bit offsided, but shame you can't put the "O' over his right eye, the "M" straddling his nose, and the diagonal of the "N" over his other eye so that it and his iris form the circle/slash of the international symbol for 'Do Not'"
If that makes any sense.
Probably not... it's been a long day... and it's going to be a short night.

I get you, yeah. My teacher actually suggested covering his eyes for just that reason, that you can't see them until you take a closer look. Basically, the strong background colour is supposed to catch the eye, but covering his eyes makes you want to pick up the book for a closer look. lol
