The Conclave were humanity's last hope for survival against an enemy residing in a metaphysical plane of reality. They were genetically engineered and nano-bot augmented to be walking, thinking supercomputers capable of manipulating the fabric of metaphysical reality for the purposes of fighting this great enemy.

As artificial lifeforms, they were intentionally made to be incapable of self reproduction and are essentially genderless.

Later in the story they come from, they become Stewards of the dying remnants of the Human race, desperately trying to return them to their former technological glory and defeat the enemy responsible for the obliteration of Human civilisation.
