its a cheap way to give texture to a base for whatever mini your wanting mounted these spiders were just that no base an the legs to me are asking to be broken so i added the base to protect them an make um look good the base is actually a fender washer
i glued a bit of thin cardboard in the hole then painted white pva glue (elmers) over the washer an using crushed clean cat litter (clay) poured that onto the glue let it dry covered then shake the excess off reapply if desired add in a few bigger bits an again let dry then using a junk brush thin the wite glue to nearly water consistency an using the brush put drips of glue onto the top of the clay this smooths the layer an glues the grains down
you can add a tiny bit of paint color to help it will soak into the clay changing its color then it seals it so later washes / floods of color wont change the gravel color in these cases i painted one black an washed browns an tans on to the spaces around the grains (the black spider) an the other i primed with a light tan primer an then washed reds an browns into the gravel the texture in both is like what youd find near a spiders den where they dig out a burrow
to help add support as the spiders are only touching the base at the tips of three legs i cut a bit of clear glue stick (which is near invisible under them) an put it into the casting hole in their abdomen that glued to the base they are VERY secure i know it cant be seen from this angle but the brown has a faint skull face on its back i wanted it to be very faint i added some bits of dead twigs to help it catch the eye an some red for blood as they are clearly in an attack pose
you can use play sand as well which is clean (its been washed of soil so its just sand) an has the visual look of a pea gravel to scale with most mini i plan on this with my half dragon character and his small square base from reaper mini adding a mace to his weapons a trimmed down huge mace meant for a warlord i got done an now its more for a lg half dragon archer for that close in support
