When nighttime came and the last of the cubs had been picked up by their parents, Mrs. Valerie started making dinner. She thought that tomato soup with bread and cheese would be best for comforting small hearts. There was still no word about Clarissa’s mother, who was still in bad shape from what Mrs. Valerie had heard the last time she had called the hospital. The kitchen clock ticked and tocked while she chopped the onions.
She felt sorry for Clarissa. Both because her mother was in the hospital, and also because Rose Moran had never shown any affection for her when she came to arrive. Most cubs ran to their parents arms with joy when they came to pick them up. Not ever Clarissa. Clarissa always proved reluctant to go to her mother, which, as every wise teacher knows, is often a sign all is not well at home. Rose Moran, for her part, was always either snarling on her cell phone at some poor creature, or if she wasn’t, she would talk to the other parents with an attitude of contempt. More than once, Mrs. Valerie had sworn she had heard her mutter racial slurs at her under her breath. Really, it was no wonder Clarissa went out of her way to be mean sometimes. Children do model after their parents, after all.
But it didn’t look like Clarissa was going to be mean this night. She was having too much fun! Mrs. Valerie could hear the children bouncing on the bed upstairs, their laughter filling the whole house. She could hear CubzBop4 blaring in the background. Then, there was a loud thump! Concerned, she stuck her head around the corner, and yelled up the stairs. “Everything okay?” she shouted. “Nothing broke, Mama! Everything’s fine!” Jack answered.
Meanwhile, Jack, Jane, and Clarissa were on the floor, panting and laughing at the same time. “Okay…heeheehee…okay…From now on, no kicking…” Clarissa huffed and puffed.
“Hahaha…Sorry!” Jane replied. “I thought it would be a cool dance move!” Jane had kicked outwards and caught Clarissa off guard, causing both girls and Jack to lose their balance and tumble to the floor. Thankfully, since almost every floor in Mrs. Valerie’s house was made of soft carpeting, no one was seriously hurt.
“Well, what do you want to do next?”
Before there could be any answer, Mrs. Valerie called out “Children! Its time for dinner!” Obediently, all three little paws thundered down the stairs to the dining room. Because the daycare was also the family home, the dining room had a long small table for the cubs, and a big round table for the grown-ups and the bigger cubs. It was at this last one dinner was served, since school had long since finished and Mrs. Valerie wanted her children close to her.
“What’s for dinner, Mama?” Jack asked.
“Tomato soup with bread and cheese,” Mrs. Valerie answered.
“Ooh, yum!” said Jane.
Clarissa tried to climb into the big grow-up chair, but Mrs. Valerie stopped her. “It’s better if I do it, sweetie,” Mrs. Valerie said. She picked up Clarissa and set her in the chair, where there was a booster seat inside for her to use. Mrs. Valerie did the same thing with her own cubs, and then sat down herself.
“Time to hold hands,” she said in a friendly sing-song voice. “Angels of God, our guardians dear, to whom God’s love commits us here-“
“-ever this day be at our side, to love and guard, to rule and guide. Amen,” said Jack and Jane as they joined their mother in saying grace. “Let us eat,” she said.
Clarissa took the first bite of her tomato soup, since the cheese didn’t look that good to her. She smiled at how its warmth took her mind off her troubles. She ate slowly, worried that if she made a mess, Mrs. Valerie would yell at her like her Mother would.
Jane liked the tomato soup too- so much she splattered little bits of it all over the table. “Smaller bites, dear,” Mrs. Valerie admonished. Turning to Jack, she asked “So Jack, how’s Juanita doing?”
“I think she likes me, Mama! I let her use the bathroom before me because she needed it, and then we played construction trucks togetter. I’m not sure, but I think her Dad drives a dump truck.”
“I bet you’d like to see that someday,” Mrs. Valerie said.
“How come Maria and Juanita can’t talk like us?” Jane asked.
“Ah, that’s because they come from another country.”
“What’s a country?” Clarissa asked.
“It’s the name of the place we live. We live in America. Maria and Juanita used to live in a country called El Salvador.”
“So why’d they come here?” Clarissa asked.
Mrs. Valerie wasn’t sure how to phrase this in a way that wasn’t grown-up talk. “It’s because there were a lot of mean furs doing mean things to each other. It was getting too dangerous for little cubs to stay, so their Mama and Papa decided they should live here instead.”
That seemed to satisfy the conversation for a while. When everyone was finished eating, Mrs. Valerie gathered up the dirty plates.
After putting the dirty dishes in the sink, Mrs. Valerie soaked a washcloth in hot water. Clarissa thought she was going to wash the dishes. Instead, she came back to the table and started scrubbing Jane’s face.
“Mmph! Mrs. Valerieeee!” she moaned.
“Now now, Jane” her mother replied, “you’ve got tomato soup and breadcrumbs all over your face!”
Jack thought it was funny how his sister could whine like a little cub sometimes. “Heeheeheeheehee!” he giggled.
“What are you laughing about, mister? Now it’s your turn!”
“Umph! Mamaaaa!” Jack groaned. Jane grinned and stuck her tongue out at him!
When Clarissa’s turn came, she didn’t struggle at all. She was glad to have someone else wipe her face rather than be barked at to do it herself.
“See children? Clarissa didn’t wiggle or whine when I washed her face,” Mrs. Valerie said in her gentle teasing voice.
“Well, now that dinner is finished, I thought we would watch a movie as a family before getting ready for bed. Clarissa, you’re welcome to join us.”
The movie was Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School. Clarissa had never seen it before! Her own mother never would have done this with her. Usually she would say she was too busy.
While Mrs. Valerie was busying herself in the kitchen with the popcorn, the opening credits started playing. “Hurry up, Mama!” Jack called. He wanted to be sure she didn’t miss a thing. “It’s starting!”
“Almost done, Jack!” Shaggy, Scooby, and Scrappy were appearing on the TV screen. They were driving up a muddy road surrounded by dark woods, getting ready for their new school. Shaggy was going to be the gym teacher for a girl’s school! Or so he thought.
“Hurry, Mama! You’re gonna miss the best part!”Jack called. There was a loud ‘ding!’ as the microwave finished making the popcorn. Mrs. Valerie poured it into a big bowl and brought it into the TV room. “Here I am,” Mrs. Valerie said. Together the three cubs and their caregiver sat down on the couch to watch the movie.
Well of course, Shaggy and Scooby were not at a real girl’s school at all. It was a school for monsters! The whole family hooted with laughter as Shaggy and Scooby cowered in terror at the introduction of Matches the Dragon, Winnie the Werewolf, Elsa Frankenteen, Phantasma the Ghost, Sibella the Vampire, and Tanis the Mummy’s Daughter. They tried to run away- much to Scrappy’s disappointment- only to find they had signed a contract. So they were stuck. But the girls were all friendly monsters, so the three of them got used to it.
Jack and Jane rested their heads in their mother’s lap as the movie went on and as the hour grew late. She thought it was cute how Jane was still just small enough to suck her thumb when she was sleepy. It made Clarissa feel a little bit jealous, since her own mother never got this close to her.
Mrs. Valerie seemed to be a mind-reader, because she smiled softly pulled Clarissa into a one-armed hug. Clarissa smiled, and taking her caregiver’s paw, she leaned back to watch the movie.
All went well from the gang’s arrival until the evil witch Revolta tricked Shaggy into taking the girls for a run in Barren Bog. She wanted to kidnap them and make them her brainwashed minions so she could take over the monster world, and she almost succeeded! But Shaggy, Scooby, Scrappy, and Matches managed to rescue the girls before the witch’s potion could take effect at midnight. The wicked Revolta was defeated, and all the children and their caregivers went home, where there was a party to celebrate their return.
As the movie ended,Clarissa thought about her mother, and felt something hot and wet come into her eyes. She felt happier with Mrs. Valerie than she ever had felt at home! Her mother had never done anything like this with her, and now she might never have the chance. But would Clarissa even miss her if the worst thing happened? Something hot and wet came up to her eyes. She looked at how happy Jack and Jane were with their mother, and felt something even yuckier inside her heart…
“Wasn’t that a good movie?” Mrs. Valerie asked.
“The best!” Jack barked.
“I really liked the Callaway’s bike-airplane! Do you think we could build one just like it?” Jane asked her brother. Before Mrs. Valerie could answer, there was a loud sniffle from Clarissa.
Three heads turned to look at her. Sure enough, Clarissa was crying. “Aww,” cooed Mrs. Valerie, “did something in the movie scare you, Clarissa?” She scooped the little one into her lap and snuggled her.
“Noooooo…,” the little fawn moaned.
“Then what happened?” Mrs. Valerie asked.
“I was thinking ‘bout my Mama…” Clarissa sniffled.
“Aww, sweetpea,” Mrs. Valerie murmured in that special cooing voice she used for crying cubs, “your Mama will be out of the hospital soon.”
But Clarissa wasn’t sure how much she wanted that to happen. She wanted to stay here with Mrs. Valerie, who cared about her and did things with her. At home, it was as if her Mother barely knew she was there. And then Clarissa felt worse, because what if that meant she was being a bad girl for feeling that way about her Mother? It wasn’t fair!
“Everything will be okay,” Mrs. Valerie said. “I promise. Hey, I know what might make you feel better! How about we get ready for bed, and when you’re all ready, I’ll read you a story?”
The children and their caregiver walked upstairs, where Mrs. Valerie helped them dress into their pajamas. Clarissa borrowed a lavender nightgown from Jane, which Mrs. Valerie said looked very cute on her. Afterwards, they cleaned their teeth and brushed their hair, with Mrs. Valerie being very careful to make sure everyone remembered to brush behind the ears.
When everyone was settled and ready, Mrs. Valerie sat on the bed, and Jack, Jane, and Clarissa got on her lap or got as close to her as they could. Smiling, Mrs. Valerie opened the book and said “This is Snuggle Bunnies.”
Mrs. Valerie looked at the first page and began. “”It was the end of a warm summer’s day, and Rosy, Posy, and Dozy were playing outside.
“”Dinner is ready, my three little bunnies!” said Mama Bunny.
“Can’t we stay outside just a little longer?” begged Rosy.
“Dinner, dinner, what’s for dinner?!” cried Dozy.
“Come in and see,” said Mama.
The three little bunnies washed their paws and faces, and then they sat down to a scrumptious dinner.
Mama had made their favorite dishes! They had carrot stew, a crisp lettuce salad, and lots of munchy, crunchy radishes.
After dinner, the bunnies played out on the porch. They looked at the moon as it rose high in the sky. The stars sparkled high above.
“I love watching the stars sparkle on the grass outside, too,” Jack mumbled, sleepily. Mrs. Valerie gave him a kiss and moved on.
””Time for your baths now,” Mama said softly.
Mama filled the tub with warm, bubbly water, and they all hopped in.
Soon the bunnies were clean and dry. Posy asked “Mama, can we have a story?”
“Please, please, pretty please?” asked Dozy.
Mama smiled. “Of course.”she said.
Mama sat on the sofa, and Rosy, Posy, and Dozy snuggled up close. “Read us the story about the bunny who runs away,” said Rosy.
Mama did. Then Posy whispered “Look Mama! Dozy’s asleep!”
Mama tucked all three of her bunnies into bed. “Good night, my little ones,” she said. “I love you!”
“We love you too!” Rosy and Posy said.
Dozy mumbled in his sleep. “Love, love…Mama love…”
Mama smiled, and turned off the light. “Sleep well, my little bunnies. May you have sweet dreams all through the night!”
Mrs. Valerie closed the book, gazing lovingly at her two children and their guest. “And now, my dears, its time you went to bed as well.” She tucked all three of them in, and gave them each a kiss on their foreheads.
“Goodnight Jack.”
“Goodnight, Mama.”
“Goodnight Jane”
“Goodnight Valerie.”
“Goodnight Clarissa.”
“Goodnight!”
As she turned off the light, Mrs. Valerie added “I’ll see you all in the morning. Love you all lots!”
As Clarissa drifted off to sleep, she thought about her Mother, and hoped she would be okay. It was a little bit scary, sleeping in a new house while waiting for what might be good or bad news.
Jane must have guessed what her friend was feeling, because she reached over and gave Clarissa a sleepy hug. “You’ll always be my friend Clarissa. Everything will be okay.”
Clarissa smiled as her eyes closed. “I know it will.”
