Back in the day, Detroit was a major center for the arts. Lots of donations from wealthy auto and steel magnates.

Detroit had (still has?) a beautiful opera house, I believe. There's also Detroit's principal museum, which was (and to a certain extent still is) world-class. And some really lovely movie theatres. Thankfully, the Fox still survives.

I've always had affection for Detroit, in part because I like the teams that play there, but also that it's a city that's still punching, even though it's been knocked down a number of times.

Its a city that unfortunately had married itself in turn to two single industries. Steel and then automobiles. and when those industries crashed, they took the city with them. Now its suffered major depopulation with people moving away and it has a litany of problems. I hope that they can find something to bring it back, but I fear whatever it finds will become the next monoculture leaving it vulnerable to a single industry.

Many great museums, indeed. The opera house is very much still there. The Fox just got renovated, and is beautiful!

I've seen a number of pictures of it. Why they didn't refer to it in the obits for Mike Ilitch, I can't imagine. It's lovely, and a real jewel. I'm told the area near the theatre is called Foxtown.

So, early MoTown?

Depends on how you define "early," since this came out in 1930, and by that time, the auto industry was well established.
