THE MAGIC OF LIFE (by blue443)
Tap tap tap. Footsteps could be heard clanking on the cold cobblestone floor, the little light from the early morning sun rising through the open stone archways gave little warmth for the mistress walking at a steady pace. A few servants were up getting things ready for the start of the day. When she passed they bowed in respect for their queen. At the end of the hallway a large double door awaited her. She pushed the heavy doors open and entered, hearing a loud snore in the dark corner.
The Queen went to the shutters to open them, letting the morning sun and fresh air in. Lit by the sunlight, the dark corner revealed a groggy dragon with one eye lazily half open. The blue and yellow striped dragon stretched his legs out, knocking some of the large wooden toys around him out of the way. Even though he was big he was still considered a child by dragons.
“Storm, how many times do I have to tell you to keep your room tidy.” Storm’s Foster mother spouted.
The young dragon looked at her, then at the dozen of toys in the room he left about last night after playing with them. Colorful balls, wooden blocks attached to ropes. All the toys a young dragon can knock around and be rough with, except for his dragon doll he kept at his bed.
“I am sorry mother,” Storm frowned. “I was tired last night and did not keep my word.” Storm got up and walked towards his mother, though still with a mind of a young child he stood over her by a few feet.
“We have an important day,” pausing. “But a dragon that cannot follow simple rules cannot begin to study magic,” she softly scolded.
Storm whiskers and ears drooped down. “It will not happen again mother. Please let me clean my room up it will not take much time.” Storm pleaded, hoping she would forgive him.
She looked at the sad dragon, when his eyes went big she could not resist. “Very well Storm, clean your room up and we will head out.” She turned and headed out.
Storm got to his feet scurrying around the room grabbing with his fangs the large wooden blocks and other simple toys made for him and dropped each into a large chest off to the side. He gathered his large cushions and reformed his comfy nest, putting his doll last in the center. Seeing that his room was picked up, the young dragon made haste out of the room nearly trampling a servant when he leaped into the hallway.
Familiar with its layout, Storm ran through the castle; a place mother has said was home. A feeling of safe. No longer was he scared of the humans here like he once was.
Claws scraping the stone floor, the large dragon came to a halt in front of the kitchen where a friendly face smiled from inside.
“Ah, Storm. There you are. I thought you slept in and forgot about your big day.” The elder cook questioned as he carried a large bag for the dragon.
“Mother almost didn't let me go chief. I forgot to clean my room and she was not going to teach me.” Storm rambled.
“Your mother knows best Storm. She is very wise.” He paused as he got Storm fitted with saddles filled with food for his outing with his mother. “She is right.” The old cook went to Storm’s head and held his finger up to his snout without an ounce of fear. “A child that cannot keep his room clean cannot be trusted with great powers. Your mother entrusts me and my assistance to keep everyone fed in this castle. If we didn't keep our kitchen clean we all be out of a job.” The friendly cook went to the table and grabbed a few apples and held them up for Storm, who happily devoured them all in a few chomps. “You listen to her, Storm. She doesn't lead those she cares about astray.” The old man finishing his morning wisdom.
Storm gave a polite bow, kneeling a foreleg down and his head. The cook gave the dragon a pat on the head. Storm used this to attack him with a slurp to his face before he darted off before the cook could yell at him.
Storm knew where his mother wanted to meet him, in the castle courtyard center. He went there and waited on the soft grass for Mother to arrive when she would be done with her morning duties. Storm waited for what seemed like an eternity till he finally dozed off.
“Storm,” a soft voice woke his nap. The warm face of his mother was looking down at him, “The sun has barely peaked the horizon and you already have taken a nap.” She smiled, ”I swear dragons must be part cat with all the naps you take.”
Storm gave a feline like stretch. “I see nothing wrong with being part cat. They are cunning hunters, strong for their size.”
“Ok, my Cat dragon,” Mother laughed as she got onto Storms back, “let us go now.”
Storm turned his head around, “But where to Mother?”
“To the part of the woods I have told you to not enter,” She replied, grinning.
Storm excitement turned to unease, “But you have told me to never go there?”
“This is true, but I am allowing it now with me showing you the way inside.” Mother replied
With a spread of his large wings, Storm reared and leapt into the air taking flight with powerful beats. The flight wasn't too long because Storm knew where the area he was not allowed to go. It was part of the main forest near the castle, but still a bit a ways to get to. If one looked at this part of the woods from the outside it looked different from the rest of the forest. To Storm it felt different, but for now he was flying in the air with Mother and he couldn't be happier.
Storm’s ears perked seeing the forest edge as the sun was just starting to warm the land below in the cool morning. He landed at the edge. Mother jumped down with grace as always and walked to the forest only to turn and look back at Storm.
“Son, are you going to follow?” she asked.
Storm felt a strange sensation coming from within; strange yet familiar. He didn't know what it was and it frightened him.
“I feel something coming from within,” Storm replied, trying to not sound scared.
“There are only a few humans left on earth that can feel what comes naturally for a dragon like you to sense,” she assured, smiling. “Don't be alarmed. It is natural, always around us wherever we go. It is just stronger in here. I will explain once we get inside to a favorite spot I like to visit.” She approached Storm and gave his head a hug. “You are different Storm, you are a dragon. And you must learn what your real parents would have taught you years ago.”
Storm choked up as she hugged him. “My dragon parents,” he replied, unsure. “You are going to teach me something my real parents would have taught me?” The young dragon continued, trying not to show he was getting sad thinking of his deceased parents. With new found courage he advanced from his spot to walk beside his mother into the dark forest.
After walking for a bit Storm started feeling new sensations; like never being able to smell before. Something new awoke in him and all this new information was overwhelming.
“Mother,” Storm stuttered, “I Don't understand what's going on.” He was starting to get scared, not knowing how to cope with it.
“Close your eyes and think of me. Don't be afraid, son. Just think of me with your eyes closed.” Mother said softly, trying to keep her much taller son from panicking.
Trusting her, Storm closed his eyes and thought of his mother standing before him.
“Now tune out the sounds around you,” Storm heard his mother say.
He did as she said, giving less focus to what he heard and more to thoughts of his mother. This new sense was easier to focus on. Soon in his mind he saw a ghostly image of his mother before him.
“I can see you?” Storm said confused with his eyes closed still
“Yes, good. Your sixth sense is awakening. This forest is special as you can feel. It is one of the many places in the world where the planet’s life energy leaks through and changes the area around it,” she informed the confused dragon. Then she stepped away a bit. “Now with your eyes closed, I want you to walk to me.”
Storm saw her fuzzy image move away. “I can only see you mother,” saying with a worried tone.
“In time you will be able to see more, but trust in the life force to guide you. It has lead you this far in life,” she replied, encouragingly.
Storm did as he said. In his mind he walked to her and a path of light formed to guide him. He walked the few steps closer to her.
“Ok storm you can open your eyes,” she instructed when he got close enough to bump her head.
Storm opened them. Sure enough mother was right there in front of him, but as he looked around this was a completely a new place.
“Mother where are we? I only stepped a few feet,” Storm said in shock as he was now standing on a land bridge over a small stream. A waterfall was across a water hole and the place was full of colorful glows. Upon closer inspection he saw the plant life glowing. Large bushes gave off different soft hues. Little insects glowed softly. And the air was so invigorating it gave him a new energetic feeling he never felt before.
Mother smiled again, seeing the dragon she adopted many years ago finally getting to feel the planet's life energy. “We walked for almost an hour, Storm,” she replied, smiling. “You were being guided by Gaia. Your sense of time is off when you commune with Gaia.”
Storm sat down and looked at his mother, “I heard Gaia being mentioned before. Who is Gaia?
“Gaia is you. Gaia is me. Gaia is the planet. Gaia is in everything in our world. Without Gaia there would be no life. But to answer more directly, Gaia lives at the core of our world.” Pausing, mother added for the confused dragon. “Many, many years ago dragons, gryphons and humans all lived in harmony, but over time humans didn't like to share the world with their flying friends. So, the dragons and gryphons went into hiding. Overtime they were all hunted and killed to extinction.”
Storm frowned, knowing well of this story and the fact that he was the last dragon alive.
Mother continued with her story, “But one day a dragon egg appeared in a circus, and you were hatched. It was also this time I heard Gaia cry out in sorrow. Gaia’s words were sad and mournful and the day you were hatched Gaia took away the gift given to humans. The gift we call magic.”
Storm listened on. “Gaia cried out for me?” storm asked confused.
“Gaia was very sad that its children would hurt each other so much and as punishment took away the gift of magic from all but a few humans. But with your hatching, Gaia spoke and told me to find you, Storm. I still held my gift from Gaia after that day. And Gaia guided me to you, like you followed me just now.” Mother said with a smile. “We were destined to meet, Storm.”
The dragon stood in shock, wondering how all of this could be true. “If this Spirit watches over me, why did it take me away from my real parents? Why did I have to live in the circus for so long? Why did I have to live alone so long in that forest?” Storm cried, thinking of his bad past while dropping his head into his mother's lap.
“That I can not answer, Storm. Gaia is a guide, but does not interfere in the affairs of its children. Gaia could not take any more pain when you were taken from your family. It acted on something I never read in past books. What it did has never been done before,” mother said, stroking Storm’s ear to soothe him. “Gaia does love you. Gaia loves everyone and has taken an interest in you, Storm. You, the last of the dragons.”
“I don't want to be the last dragon,” Storm whimpered.
“I know, but there are more reasons I brought you here than just to tell about how I found you. I am to start teaching you about magic,” mother offered.
“You mean Gaia's gift, right?” Storm asked.
“Yes. Magic is basically Gaia’s life energy and we can manipulate it because Gaia lets us,” mother replied. “When we first entered this forest I said this place was so different because Gaia’s life force leaks out here from deep within the world’s core; so things grow with more life. All things have Gaia's life energy in it but here it is much stronger. The plants absorb it the most then the herbivores eat the plant.” Mother chuckled, watching Storm nibble on a plant he found as she talked. “And the meat eaters eat the plant eaters getting Gaia’s life energy.”
Storm paused a moment thinking he knew dragons could use magic but as of yet never knew how. “What can we do with this magic?” Stormed asked with interest.
“Mother smiled gently. “Well, there are limits to what one can do, and it is not wise to abuse Gaia's gift. Dragons used magic mostly as peaceful means: To help plants grow, guiding them along. To befriend the wildlife. Or even to help you fly.” Mother observed Storm’s ears wiggle at her last statement and confirmed. “Yes, you have been using magic all along without knowing it. Without Gaia's help you would never make it off the ground.”
Storm stretched his wings out wondering how this was but then rested them back down. Then, thinking it mundane, Storm questioned. “That doesn’t sound like much. Did dragons do anything else?”
“Mostly no. The dragons’ role in this world is to keep a balance in nature. Their magic is very nature attuned, and used mostly for peaceful means. But you can get creative with enough training.” Mother smiled seeing Storm’s interest peeked again. She raised a hand causing a cold frost to flow from the palm and snake across the ground, freezing the cover as it crawled farther away. It went under some bushes, from there to form a cloud of mist which swirled and changed into the shape of an elk.
Storm stood up, amazed from what he saw. The elk looked back at him then the glow died and faded away. “Mother that was spectacular!” He exclaimed.
“The magic is nature based, but with training you can shape it. Over the years I have trained to harness the magic in more powerful ways than anyone has ever thought.” And with that she held her hands close and the air between them glowed. Suddenly there was a loud bang and bright light, a small bolt of electricity dancing between her palms.”
Storm reeled back, frightened by the sudden noise and light. “What was that mother?” He asked, stuttering.
A simple taste of the power I will teach you, Storm. In time you will become a master of the sky and control the very storms.
