NSFW version
Axe is a switch, it's hard to know whether they'll be interested in mounting or being mounted until it happens, but they do have a taste for smaller partners when they're interesting in doing the mounting. Axe has very few successful clutches due to an impulse to consume their own eggs, due to trauma earlier in life, but they do have surviving offspring, including a hybrid child raised by a blue dragon mother.
Generally solitary, but not unsocial, Axe is particularly curious of humans and this has got them in trouble more than once. They have a taste for exotic partners, but usually aren't interested in keeping their mates around for companionship.
Axe's normal territory is fairly standard for their species, and they prefer to stay within easy flying distance of the coast, but rarely live right on it, to avoid storms. With a fairly strong self preservation instinct, Axe doesn't usually flirt with trouble, but their curiosity sometimes out does them and causes problems. They like to sunbathe after big meals. Some Skerry dragons are good singers, Axe is not one of them.
Somewhat anxious, Axe's anxiety manifests as increased aggression, which has gotten them a name for being grumpy or angry, neither of which is particularly true. Though they are introverted, and tend to give the cold shoulder when socially drained, and are bad at balancing this with their desires to interact with others.
Has no long term mate, but has a close friend in another dragon: Chalk.
Rather territorial, Axe doesn't back down from their chosen roost easily. Although they can be displaced by simply existing in their space without directly challenging them for it. Has been chased out of roosts multiple times by irate human locals after picking off their sheep or cattle.
The coloured scales on the throats of Skerries shed after the breeding season, and hold their colour for a couple of years left untreated, this makes fresh shed a valuable resource for those who can afford it, and the scales can be seen on expensive clothing. In some areas this is scavenged for by humans, in other areas more savvy dragons trade it for other goods. Gold and jems appeal to Skerries, but they have more value in fishing nets/repairs for nets, and waterproofed leathers and similar materials.

Bit of a detrimental habit there, but I guess they can control themselves enough not to eat all the eggs.
Cool species all around though, that genetic fluke quip is pretty unique and heh woo sizeplay~! Rest of it is cool as well, you seem to have put a lot of thought into it!
Are they an open species so to say?

Yeah just a bit ^^ they generally produce healthy offspring when they DO survive, so some individuals have targeted Axe for breeding, with the intent of taking the eggs away.
Axe is less likely to turn on them if they were the sire though.
Their first clutch was found and destroyed by something or someone, this isn't that unusual in and of itself, and Skerries will eat destroyed eggs to regain some of the minerals put into them. But for some reason, possibly a combination of their young age and excitement over having their first clutch or because they'd left them unattended, it became fixed in Axe's head as 'the only way to keep eggs safe'. Other behaviours associated with traumatic clutch loss in Skerries is refusing to leave the eggs, even when the other parent is offering to stay with them, refusing to go out and hunt/get water, being super aggressive even towards their partner or even just refusing to stay with the eggs and abandoning them. This is mostly likely to occur with first timers, and it's become fairly typical now for young Skerries to have their first clutches in communal areas close to their grandsource (humans sometimes mislable them as a matriarch, or brood mother, neither of which is true) so they can be helped by more experienced dragons and are less likely to make a tragic mistake.

Mmhm, sounds pretty plausible, I could add this is how something akin to culture springs up! Social evolution 8D Their grandsource as you called them retain bonds/attachment to their offspring?
Also, "Give me your babies but you can't see them!" if Axe is generally a good specimen of their species not even surprised, I'd imagine dragons might have a thing for wishing for strong progeny.

Basically yeah =P as with humans, they started to develop closer and more complex social structures when it catered to their needs and resulted in a higher number of surviving offspring. But as their brains became more complex they also started to show signs of that complexity going wrong, as with humans, parrots etc...
Yes and no? The grandsource (or whatever I end up naming them), is an honorary role taken on by the oldest/biggest source/s in the immediate area, they're usually brought various forms of tribute and asked for advice, or they settle disputes, sort of like a chieftain but without such a strict social hierarchy. At some point (there's probably some mythology surrounding this), they started to welcome younger dragons into their lairs. This has brought about the false belief in other species that all Skerries in a certain area come from one big brood mother, who they return to with food, and whose eggs they're looking after. When in reality they may or may not be related to them. It's not in a grandsource's best interests to be aggressive or shun their smaller compatriots, so aside from a tendency to grow more mellow with age (lots of kids, plenty of time to learn patience), they cultivate habits that allow them to keep their little clan of helpers. Once you get to a certain size, hunting gets harder, as does flying. Before they started to congregate like this, it wasn't known how large sources could get, as they tended to die off a lot younger, now some of them reach massive sizes. Growth slows the older they get, partly due to age, partly due to their increasing pickiness in mates. You have to REALLY prove yourself to a grandsource to earn the right to breed with one, so their clutches might be few and far between in their older age. Interestingly this has resulted in old-age illnesses, such as arthritis starting to appear in the population.
It's not a common occurrence, but it's happened once or twice. Young (small) sires have occasionally tried their luck to avoid having to act as a source, and some sources will pick Axe then leave them behind if the competition isn't so great in their area. Axe doesn't just survive, they thrive, even after it was suspected they would start to withdraw and wither away from the main bulk of the flight (they're not often seen in more highly populated areas and avoid social gatherings), and the offspring they've had have tended to be hardy and bright. So if the risk balances out, Axe sometimes gets a visit. Is certainly more likely to be a source who's other options aren't so great (maybe they're not such a great option themselves) or a adolescent sire who's more interested in getting their dick wet than actually raising the offspring--the latter being far less likely to get any luck, at least in the way they might have hoped...

Mhm you seem to have done research on the subject! Yeah a lot of diseases have appeared because hundreds of years ago not a lot of people lived to be so old, Id imagine any biological creature except simpler ones like jellyfish can totally subvert that.
Are you ever planning on a long-span view of this species? For example how they might begin to adapt writing and all sorts of civilization building tools, that wold be easier with humans around probably as an example. The social setup makes all in all and also gives nice basis for all sorts of pictures!
Hmm a tradeoff of likely being a lone parent, but at least fairly healthy offspring huh. Makes me wonder, as a herm would they have have same currentsex flings with their species or is that just not a thing for them? Or is that why they seek out "exotic" ones?

Ah, I've picked up on things here and there ^^; I'd probably need to do some Real research as and when I go on with this story line.
Maybe? I'd like to get Axe's own story down more solidly before I expand to look at the bigger picture, but to an extent it would have to be done simultaneously. Maybe I'll include some speculation in larger pictures I do of them.
I do know that Skerries don't have, over all, a particularly good relationship with humans, and in some areas its positively hostile, other areas they're friendly.
Oh sure! They have sexual-activity preferences that certainly mirror sexuality in humans/other species with generally distinct sexes. Some prefer frotage/tribbing or oral to penetrative sex, but they don't think of it as sources preferring sources or sires preferring sires, so much as what parts of their bodies they prefer to be using. Axe as an individual has a taste for penetrative sex, but they're certainly not averse to other forms.

This sort of research can be rather fun at times Id even say! Going through endless pages of wiki and other sides ;p
Sounds promising overall, always cool to see some nice world building from artists. It's both inspiring and fascinating!
Make's sense for a herm species, though I imagine tribbing is a little hard for them? Except perhaps if partner was smaller or more biped. Axe seems to be featured more in source position so that's their favorite sway?

It's a bit awkward, but possible, due to their anatomy however, tribbing would almost always devolve into frotting, but that'll get covered when I update this into the NSFW ref sheet.
I think that's about 50% my own bias and 50% Axe's personal ethics.
Axe DOES love mounting, they're super into it, but they tend to take it a bit slower, and be a bit more cautious of whether or not they're about to knock someone up who can't handle it, possibly reflecting their first pregnancy, they tend to be a bit OVERLY cautious, and there's been a few sources who've had to put their foot down about knowing what's best for themselves. They also prefer to get a bit more personal with sources/dragonesses and really go through the whole displaying process. Where as they're pretty relaxed about taking responsibility for their own potential clutch if they choose to lift their tail for a sire/drake, should they not want to stick around. I do like pairing up Axe with dragonesses, but so far it's always been with the characters of people I know a little bit more, I've seen their character a few times, I've talked to them a few times etc... And if Axe ever has a long-term relationship, it would probably be as a sire.
I guess... Casual = getting the D. Serious = giving the D. In Axe's mind.

Mhm intriguing dynamic there, I imagine the psychology of their species could an interesting and hard piece of work to write considering any individual might go any direction with this sorta thing. Sounds like Axe is actually a sweetie then 8D, considerate and otherwise truthworthy derg.
Also notable, flaws make characters more colorful!

They're not dislike humans, in that they're a social species and all the baggage that comes with that, but they are somewhat less immediate-family oriented, there's no concept of siding with someone because you're related etc... but I still have a lot of details to work out with that P=
Basically yes! Bit of a grump, but a decent soul, empathetic and sympathetic, just an introvert and with moments of cynicism.

Eventually! XD
I do want to draw them more often, there are so many cool dragon characters on this site, I wanna pair them up with more >w> as well as just draw them in their natural environment, it would be nice to have more paintings of them.
Thank you! Axe is quite special in that they've really barely changed in... idk, 7-8 years? They've been refined, their anatomy has gotten better, and some details have changed--their horns have been altered slightly and they no longer have a really obvious pubic bone, things like that. But their overall body/neck shape, tail design, head and wings and colours haven't really changed. So I'm very sure we'll see more of them, if they're that stable =P

Not a comic, I don't have the stamina/attention span for that (as cool as it would be).
I'd like to write a story one day, as and when their plot comes together, but I certainly don't know when it would be, right now it's not really an option, but I'd LOVE to write a book about my own characters someday and Axe is a likely subject.
