Just about the same time i bought my 1863 Springfield, I found this charming piece. I had been looking for a cheap, reliable, semi automatic, good all around rifle; and had been looking into buying an SKS for a while. I finally found one for sale where i live, and pounced on it. 500$ later (ugh.... used to buy them for 90$ in the 1990's) here she is.
This rifle is a Chinese made Norinco Import SKS "Paratrooper Cowboy's Companion" (what a mouth full). Those of you familiar with the SKS design, im sure you noticed the lack of bayonet/lug, lack of cleaning rod and the shortened barrel and gas block. Norinco imported these versions of the SKS as a marketing gimmick in the 90's as "paratroopers" since they had 16" barrels instead of 20" barrels. Ontop of that, on some models they removed the bayonet and lug and the cleaning rod, while pre drilling holes for scope mounts on the receiver. These paratrooper conversions were called "Cowboy Companions" since they were streamlined down to fit in a saddle holster.
Im not sure how much of a gem it is in the world of imported SKS rifles, but im sure compared to the full sized sks rifles from china and the eastern bloc, these are rare. Believe it or not, I bought this rifle used, and when i took this rifle home I cleaned it only to find that there was still cosmoline in every nook and cranny in this rifle. ontop of that, there was hardly any wear marks on the moving parts, the barrel was still pristine (might be a chrome lined barrel i think, most of the imports were) but the rifling was sharp and defined. All in all i doubt more than 50 rounds have been through this rifle. So i pretty much got a brand new sks; the only downside is that the forward hand guard was painted black by the previous owner.

I believe that was only the "K" models that were that way. If it has the internal box still, I highly doubt that it is in any way compatible with the AK mags. But I believe all K models SKSs were to this type of specification, with 16" barrels and what not. Cool rig regardless. I'm debating on wether or not to cut my 20" grenadier model down to 16" since I have less than no use for the grenade launcher.
This one is "California compliant" meaning the mag is nondetachable and only holds 10 rounds. That being said, I can get a Tapco 20, 30, 45 round mag that is designed to fit in where the internal mag goes and is detachable provided the bolt is held open (It doesn't stay open after last round with those mags so you technically need 3 hands to work it) Doesn't matter anyway since any detachable mag in cali cant have more than 10 rounds anyways. Im happy with just the 10 round capacity. ive noticed that when i have had more ammo in a mag i tend to waste it more, and if you have good stripper clips you can load this thing just as fast as you could a mag
I have a pair of Tapco 20 round mags, but I got nothing but constant FTEs with those. A friend of mine highly recommends ProMag on the other hand. Though, his SKS was Russian, mine is Chinese. It could probably be just the make and model. Luckily, either ProMag or Tapco are relatively cheap. So it's no big loss if one doesn't work.
I wanted to get the tapco stock with retractable rear stock with a 20 round mag attatchment along with a low power scope (2 or 3X) but cali had to pass all of these laws banning the retractable stock, pistol grips, and detachable mags that have more than 10 rounds just before i bought it......
