TL;DR what's more important in a tail, looks or squishiness?
This might not make sense, but I'm looking for some input on how to design tails. A couple years ago I was kinda popular for making spandex dragon tails. (See this as an example: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/11743647/ ) I put spandex socks over solid foam cores. They looked amazing, but in my honest opinion they weren't very fun to wear. They don't have any movement, they're hard to pack in a suitcase and they are hard to sit in, which is a big deal when you're at a convention.
I have developed a new way to build tails that makes them very soft and flexible. HOWEVER I don't know how to do the tail bases, the part that sits against your butt. The red one has poly fil at the base. The entire tail is squishy like a pillow; you can hug the whole thing. The black tail has a c-shaped piece of EVA foam glued to the inside. It sits flush to your butt, so you have a nicer silhouette. However, when you aren't wearing the tail, it can't function as a squishy fun plushie. The black tail is also more difficult to put on and take off. They are both easy to sit in.
I'm leaning towards the red's design mostly because it's easier to construct. I'm just worried that the base of it looks kinda dumb. I dunno. I'm overthinking this. Halp.

alright, i took a couple pics. http://imgur.com/a/lmY1s It's hard to see what's going on with the black tail, but you can see the belt loops on the red one.
I will say this. Both are necessary, and you'll get both kinds of people who want to show off and to touch and be touched on the tail. I've been both. I wanted to be showy before I finished mine, but as I was sewing it and finishing it, it felt so snuggly, that I went touch ALL THE WAY.
I don't see why you can't use EVA and not have it all plush nice, I mean EVA is pretty soft! Right? It's not a hard rubber or plastic.... yah?
Touch divides into two neat parts for me. 1. How does it feel to snuggle/press and hug up behind/use as pillow, and 2. How natural/connected does the tail feel to tailwhip, swing, run with, jump? :D My tail is my security blanket, pillow for sleepovers and cuddling, it has literally saved my butt from fall injuries, and has lasted me a decade. It's old and not so soft now but still does well. And people like to touch it, it's gotten attention for how it looks and how it swings, and running with it, it swings naturally out of the way which was... accidental but neat. :> All that control seems to come from a sideways foam noodle pad I carved and put in the base, not glued to the tail but allowed to float inside, and is pretty stiff. So touch and movement are covered that way-- also the tailbase diameter is big, like 7 inches or so, allowing for more control and feel (gives me big phantom tail syndrome when I take it off! Awesome!!).
Looks are almost an afterthought now to me, the tail really looks better because it feels so great. :) Both of yours look great and the red one actually looks better to me... sticks out more than falling like the black one. But that's a taste thing only. I like tails that curious people and animals can reach out and interact with, and feel how soft and snuggly they are, is great for interacting with and provoking snuggles. C8
Sorry, long opinion, not short, but I SO ADORE TAILS <3!!
