There is a scrap of explanation for lope's ability to acquire things it should not be able to purchase, or money with which to make purchases, although I thought of it rather a bit after I drew this! And still, plainly, have not completed that series of thoughts.

That's relatively close to my own theory, which involved lope stealing packages (since I dimly remember at one time it was a brown-uniformed deliverylizard). It would require a lot of pure luck for the contents of the packages to actually fit or be useful (which would also partially explain its perpetual lack of pants).
None of my theories involve lope being competent enough to actually fence the stolen merchandise.
