Why is the bottom part transparent?

For the confused people, this is part of his introductory story. He starts to fade away because he's not bonded to anyone, but the player and him have a loveydovey moment just before the end. They forge a bond and he becomes the player's guardian, and realizes he does still want to live. He was heavily depressed from the assumption that his previous apprentices died under pretty sad circumstances.
