So while I'm working on some other things, I occasionally need a break to doodle something different before going back to the original piece. So here's a page of Laiko, where I've been trying to figure out how to draw him with a little more definition and dimension. Drawing anthro cats is a tricky business. They seem to do their best to defy being conformed to a single shape! So the best I can do is to develop a schema that works for me and lets me draw the character fast, since he'll be the main character and all. It's not my intent to draw him realistically either; if anything, that'd be kinda easy compared to developing a cartoony style and system. Does he even look like a cat? :/
Anyway, artyap aside, I'm doing away with some of his modern stylings and dropping him into a more traditional look, with cowboy boots (which I love to draw), period-accurate pants (front-flap button), and even his shirt is period accurate -- it's actually an under-shirt. It used to be white. He doesn't do laundry often. His duster coat meanwhile is still in design limbo, but for simplicity's sake it can probably stay the way it is. And I didn't include his gun 'cause he'll be constantly losing it and getting new ones in the story anyway.
I should probably explain the story a little bit. It's about this guy, Laiko, going on an Old West adventure that's all f-'d up. Yep, acid western. Look it up. That's why there are radios and cars in it. That's my version of 'steampunk'.

Gonna be putting this into scraps later.

Man, I love character sheets, and of course, how can you not like Laiko. ;) And yes, he looks like a cat, sheesh. Actually, I think my two favorites are that top left corner with the cranky cat ears - NICE cat face, wow. The ears are perfectly pinned, the expression very lashing tail and unhappy cat. It's very catlike. The other one is that side shot with him looking pensive - very cat muzzle, and that's hard to do. Cats are probably the most difficult animal to draw, and you did it just fine. <3
(I like his floofed tail when he's running too. Hahahahha! *poof* I'm outta here!)
I can say I do like the changes to his pants, his boots, and his undershirt. I about died when I read the whole, "used to be white" thing. Yeah, he does his laundry like I do, there ain't no white not tossed into the colors! The duster seems right for the period, though, so... <3
Still keep coming back to that top corner sketch - love it!
