Chapter Four:
After a quick shower, Falcon put some piercings into their respective ear and eyebrow holes. Then, she pulled on a couple of bangles, and looked around for her favorite wristbands. One was dark blue and black, decorated with a crescent moon and stars - "Team Luna for the win" she thought to herself. The other was just striped with a collection of colors she liked, and she placed them both around her right fetlocks. She finally slid a shiny, black leather band up her left foreleg and above her hock, and determined that she was ready to leave the house.
Peppermint sat on a low bench just outside her door, and gave her a smug smile as though she had just been caught.
"Don't you say a word," she said in a clipped tone, and trotted briskly away.
The day was wearing on, and shadows started to creep steadily to the east. It was still quite some time before the sun would actually go down though, so Falcon believed that she would have time to see the unicorn before she decided to close up shop.
When she approached the tent, the entrance flaps were closed and muffled conversation could be heard. So, Falcon guessed she was busy with a client. Well, at least she hadn't been too late. However, she wasn't sure if that was a good or bad thing, since she hadn't even wanted to come here this morning.
After standing outside, being a one-pony waiting like, for a few minutes, the opening finally rustled. Raceway stepped out, looking surprised for a moment, at seeing Falcon there, then a big smug grin spread across his muzzle.
"Looks like I got here first this time," he said, and trotted away happily before Falcon could reply. Everything was a competition with that pony.
"Come back anytime sweetie," the blue unicorn called after him, befor realizing she had another customer. "Oh, hello. Come to hear what fate has in store for you?"
Falcon cringed, and tried to find an answer that wouldn't offend the mare. "Eh, more just... curious, I guess." She hadn't been able to see from afar, but the unicorn had several facial piercings too. Two studs on either side of her lower lip - snakebites - one stud on the inner curve of her left ear and two rings through her left eyebrow, just like Falcon's own piercings. "So," she thought to herself, "we have similar tastes."
"My name is Chakra Gem," she said in a light voice, "come inside."
Falcon finally noticed her eyes just before she turned back into her tent. They were pink. They were so pink she almost couldn't believe it. She blinked for a moment, then mentally chided herself for already getting sucked in by this fraud. She stepped into the tent, internally fighting between her curiosity and dislike of charlatan showponies.
"Four bits for a standard reading, and you can come back any time if you have more questions later." Chakra sat herself on the far side of a small table - of course, there would be a crystal ball sitting on it - and eyed the earth pony like one might read a book. Falcon laid the money on the table, and quickly glanced around at the shiny stones, shells, feathers, and other things hanging from the ceiling. It reminded her of the collection of "interesting stuff" her younger sister had kept when she was a schoolpony. The gold bits were swept over Chakra's side of the table, and out of sight.
"Please, sit," Chakra encouraged in a soft voice. Falcon did so, starting to feel rather uncomfortable. "Give me your hooves," the unicorn encouraged with a smile, raising her own front hooves onto the table. Falcon regretted coming here. She didn't like strangers touching her hooves, but she placed her's on the table's surface anyway. Chakra reached forward and Falcon noticed that she had rather small hooves, and they were dark blue. "They're cute," Falcon begrudgingly thought to herself.
Chakra closed her eyes, and breathed slowly and audibly. Her head moved slightly from one side to another, as her ears twitched. She acted like she was hearing whispers from all around her.
"Your family has lived in this town a long time," she finally said. Falcon could feel her eyebrows lowering together. "A long time," can mean anything from decades to months, she thought to herself. Not impressed. "You, yourself, have an older sibling," well...that was correct, "which inspired your competitiveness." Well, that was just wrong. She was competitive, but not because of her older sister. They had never had any common interests to compete in.
"I also feel... heartbreak," Falcon didn't notice that her own ears automatically dropped, "more than one. You've had a rough time finding somepony who understands you." Falcon tried to deny what she was hearing in the soft unicorn whispers. Anypony could match that description, and it couldn't have anything to do with her own history.
However...it was true that finding another mare to be with...was difficult. Aside from the fact that she lived in a small-ish town, and there weren't many other female-inclined mares around, whenever she did meet new girls who were interested.... Well, there were a myriad of problems in the world of lesbian dating, that she didn't want to trouble herself with thinking about. At least not here, in front of this cute, blue-faced mare, with pretty pink eyes, and adorable small hooves.
Chakra finally opened her eyes, and leveled a comforting gaze at Falcon. "Somepony really confused your heart, didn't they?"
"Some...ponies," Falcon admitted against her better judgement.
"Don't let your heart weight so heavy, dear." Chakra said, with a light, reassuring press against Falcon's hoof. "The right stallion for you is out there. You don't have to wait much longer."
Falcon sighed audibly and rolled her eyes. How could she have been sucked in up until this point? She pulled her hooves away and almost glared at the pony across the table from her. It wasn't like assuming she was strait was some big insult. She just got sick of hearing the assumption so often, and her rehearsed response came out more automatically than from any real annoyance.
"Yeah, I just haven't met the right stallion yet. When I do, all my problems will just melt away, and I'll be 'cured' of my sick attraction to other mares." She said this in a rushed monotone, and seemed to surprise the unicorn sitting across from her. She placed a hoof to her forehead in frustration, "I don't know why I came here in the first place. Psychics are so fake."
Chakra sat quietly, and waited to see what Falcon would actually do. She knew that there would be skeptics to deal with from time to time, but they usually just told her off and left the tent. Falcon stayed seated. She was either waiting for something, or she wanted something. Then, she looked Chakra dead in the eyes. Even if her readings weren't accurate, she knew the question in those eyes right now.
"Do you want the truth?"
"Would you actually tell it to me? Your job is pretty much all tricking ponies out of their money with lies, right?"
Now it was Chakra's turn to feel offended and stereotyped. "Look, nopony can predict the future perfectly, but what I'm doing isn't all lies. I really can help others." Falcon's gaze shifted into an annoyed disbelief. "Despite what you may think of me, at least that is true." The silence stretched on, and Chakra began to worry about what might be crossing the mare's mind. "Besides, I have an accordance with Townhall, and I have the right to be here until the end of the week-"
"What?"
Chakra just maintained eye contact. She had said exactly what she meant.
"I'm not going to try to drive you out of town or anything." Falcon continued to chastise herself. She should have just walked out of the tent, not sat here and been so snippy. What was she waiting for?
"So, what do you want?" the blue unicorn asked calmly.
Falcon looked down at the table, and silently admitted to herself that she'd had a crush on this mare. That's why she had been glancing at her from afar for days. That was also why she had kept going along with this fortune-teller routine that she didn't even slightly believe in. She looked back up into those pink eyes, her anger replaced by a question. If not a stallion, was there a mare out there that she was destined to find? She didn't like to talk like this to anypony who knew her...but this pony would be gone at the end of the week. This pony was a stranger who meant nothing to her, and surely she could say a couple things here that wouldn't come back to haunt her after this mare had left her town.
"Be strait with me, can you really see anything in my future besides what I've already made obvious? You've already got my bits, and I'm not gonna demand a refund or sabotage your business." Chakra sensed she was being honest, and surprisingly open. Maybe this pony really did need her help, if not as a psychic, than just as somepony to listen. Before she could respond though, her guest's words rushed out. "But I mean, like... if it was possible to know where or when a pony would meet their true love...could you possibly know that?"
Chakra looked down at the table. This was something that was familiar enough, as most ponies always had questions about love. Many of them feel incomplete without it, and of course that applied to lesbians just the same as anypony else. She tried to put aside the number of vauge phrases and half-true promises that she had rehearsed for questions such as these, and thought how to give this mare an honest answer that she would accept.
After a long moment of tense silence, she finally spoke. "There is an answer to your question," she paused, hoping that the earth pony would believe her sincerity, "but it's unsatisfying and probably hard to swallow."
"Okay," Falcon responded simply, and waited quietly for the response. She could feel that this wasn't some rehearsed line. This was real.
Chakra took a moment to pull together the words she wanted. "Love... isn't black and white. It's not convenient, or easy, doesn't magically fix anything, and even if you really work at preserving it...sometimes it still won't be what you want it to be." How well she knew that. It had taken a few heartbreaks of her own before she learned not to give her love to travelling showponies. "True love...honestly, I'm not sure such a thing is possible... but I know that I've seen ponies who are sure they have it. I've also known ponies who are sure they've lost it, and yet, life goes on anyway."
"So... you're saying it's fickle?" Falcon asked, trying to grasp the meaning in this monologue.
"I'm saying that there is no ideal, unless one individual decides what their ideal is. Even then, there's no way to know, when you first encounter someone, what that pony is going to mean to you later on." Falcon gazed at Chakra Gem, wondering how much of this came from clients opening up, and how much of this lesson she must have learned through her own trial and error. "I suppose the easy answer is 'no,' I can't tell you where you might meet your true love. I just know that if somepony makes you happy, and you make them happy, then...keep that going as long as you can."
