They're actually quite similar in a number of ways! Both aardvarks and armadillos have similar silhouettes, are primarily nocturnal insectivores, known for burrowing, and have very few closely related species.
It's just that armadillos are mostly found in South America (and of extant species, most closely related to sloths and anteaters), whereas aardvarks are found in southern Africa (and of extant species, most closely related to tenrecs and shrews). And armadillos have shells, of course.
