Forficula auricularia
European Earwig.
This guy was probably the biggest earwig I've seen...almost like an inch long.
Anyhow, one photo for tonight. I'll probably process some more tomorrow. Found him in my kitchen, then let him go outside.

Absolutely gorgeous find, he's definitely a powerful male and sure to survive for years (let's just hope he doesn't meet any hungry birds though). The amount of depth in his abdomen, with that beautiful ochre color, is probably my favorite part. You're awesome for uploading this, thank you so much! :D
Wig wig wig!
It's a boy! ^_^
Oooh - he's beautiful. I love the antennae detail you caught there. Hell - the detail here is gorgeous!
I've only found one ONCE - but there is a West Australian painted earwig that is all pink and white and mauve. Hangs out in chalkier territory than my area (I'm in the red sandstone bit!)

Kinda always had a fascination of there names. And there spanish name here, "Tijerilla".
I remember getting 1 of these guys off a man in church a few weeks ago. Compared to this one, the one I removed from that stranger was tiny.
1 question though, are they dangerous in anyway? Can they pinch with the pincers?

I found one about that big once back home in MN. Such neat critters.
HOWEVER - while it is true that they are mostly harmless, and that the crawl-into-your-ear thing is technically a myth... it has happened. What they don't tell you is that plenty of insects have crawled into people's ears and done nasty things. There was a guy who went into the hospital back home complaining of an ear ache and they found maggots in there. Apparently a fly had laid a few eggs in his less than clean ear. There's also been cases of spider infestations in ears.
Anyway, earwigs: http://blogs.lib.ncsu.edu/insects/e....._earwig_report
Yeah, reliable source and everything. Freaky stuff! (But oh so cool.) :D

I just can't - it's something about the way they move. A few weeks ago I tried to swat one off the ceiling, it fell near me and I screamed like someone had thrown a live grenade at me - and turned around to see my brother just staring at me and shaking his head in utter disgust. I should be ashamed, but I'm afraid of much stupider things, too. At least with the arachnophobia I have plenty of company.
