After a while, Night was accepted into the Lunar Guard, and when she showed herself to be particularly apt, she drew the direct attention of Princess Luna. The Princess is the one who personally promoted Night to the House Guard, the personal outfit that answers directly to the Princesses, and not the Captain.

Night's personal magic is manipulation of soundwaves, and the spear makes that ability even more useful. The holes in the blade aren't just to make it lighter; they also capture and channel her magic into subsonic vibrations that throw off her opponents' equilibrium, and eventually render them deaf and permanently out of balance.
