Once Osiris took over as king of the dead, Anubis was reassigned to weigh the hearts of those who passed on against the Feather Of Ma'at, which symbolised truth. Doing evil in your life would cause your heart to be heavy, and only those with a heart lighter than the feather were allowed into the Kingdom Of The Dead.
If your heart is too heavy, Ammit the Devourer (a Crocoleopardhippo) will... eat your heart, leaving your soul to wander restlessly with no chance of rest.
Anubis weighs, Thoth records it, and Osiris decides what to do with you. simple. But this heart here looks a little too big :o
this'll be redone with acryllics on canvas-board for my AS final. I only have a 5 hour limit so I probably wont finish... but that doesnt matter, I have this beauty in my prep ^^

Now that's how Anubis is supposed to look, more than mildly intimidating. Great work, particularly the look on his face. The heart looks like one of the ones I saw in the plastinization exhibit at the Houston art museum. And the feather looks very real.
I like how you put it, "Once Osiris took over as king of the dead, Anubis was reassigned..." That change took place once the more human looking gods started to move in. I have Anubis still holding his rightful title on Lord of the Dead in my writings.
