A month has passed since that day, that day of being gifted with a second chance. A chance I still feel like I did not deserve.
I had grown used to the hospice that I was rehabilitated in for my new body. The life I felt, the energy I now had, it was fantastic! But the day I could finally be released was drawing near. I kept thinking, how would the world perceive me now? I wasn't exactly human anymore. I spoke normally, I wore clothes, I know how to drive a car, but my appearance was nothing human anymore.
The doctors told me that my body was based from an arctic fox. The only markings that formed in the body's development was the tips of the ears, a dark grey color. Almost black but not quite. My new clothes were bigger, my pairs of pants were a bigger size than I remember. But it was 2018, Christmas was closing in, all I could think about was my girlfriend. We had been dating for a few years before my accident, my family had fallen apart and she was my only piece left in my life keeping me whole. Had she moved on? I didn't know.
As I sat in my familiar room in the hospice, all I could think about was her. I had to do something, but...what? It then hit me, the library had computers. I could start there and see what I could look up about her. I was hoping she would have not moved from where I knew she was last.
"Alright, no more wasted time, I need to find her,"
I got up, grabbed my key and walked to my door, but then my doctor knocked before I could get to the door myself. Well, funny timing that's for sure. "Russell, you have a minute?"
I opened the door, my doctor, the mastermind behind my new body, standing before me once again. "Russell, I'm not sure about letting you go out into public. I know we can't keep you here indefinitely, but we need to figure out how to get you started on your own,"
What luck! Now I can have some assistance for finding my girlfriend at least! "Doc, honestly that's what I wanted to start to really go after right now. My girlfriend is my main concern," my doctor looked at me peculiar, "You know we found your phone the day of your accident, we pulled contacts you kept in touch with the most, well we only found two. Your father and a female by the name of Lynette? Your girlfriend I'm guessing,"
Lynette, what a beautiful name. She was everything to me, she kept me together when everything fell apart before the accident.
"Does she even know about me now?" I asked. Doc just sighed, "No, she was kept in the dark. However, we have her current contact information. If you're going to venture out into the real world, I would suggest staying with something you trust. Your father was also minimally informed,"
The doc handed me a piece of paper, a phone number. It was her cell phone, finally I could hear her voice again. I grabbed the paper and go over to the phone by my bed. "Guys, I want to be alone for this, please,"
The doc and the person with him nod and make their way out of my room. Nervously, I pick up the phone and hesitantly dial her number. It's changed, I don't remember it being how it was written down. The phone rings, about three times before I hear her voice.
"Hello?"
Her voice, just hearing a familiar voice after all this time, my eyes welled up quickly. I whimper but manage to talk. "L-Lynette...?"
"Yes? Who is this?"
"L-Lynette, it's me...Russell. They saved m-me,"
Silence, I felt the doubt, but I sounded different. She needed to know it was me.
"Lynette, remember that time I first took you all the way out east? To that spot that I loved? It's right by that bay with all the big boulders? Remember the rock I spent a half hour carving just our initials in the front of it? You kept telling me it didn't need to be perfect but I'm just so anal about everything and-"
"Stop," she interrupts. "Russell...he was in a coma, they told me that his mind was gone. How...how do you know that?"
"Lynette, it's me. That's why...they, they saved me," I said. I could barely think straight now, I didn't want her to think this was a lie. "I'm at the hospital, it was the same place I was brought to the day of the accident. Please, come here,"
An hour goes by, I was on my bed just waiting. It was the longest hour of my new life. But when I wanted to call her again, a knock on the door. I heard the doc's voice. As I walk over to the door, I hear Lynette's voice. I opened the door, there she was. Her face was flustered up from crying. The doc verified that it was me, she seems me and goes to hug me but stands back. "R-Russell? That's you?"
The doctor didn't explain my new body in any detail. Apparently he wanted her to experience it with no first hand knowledge. My eyes welled up again, as I muster up the energy to even talk. "Hunny, it's me. I've missed you," Lynette just knew at that point, she hugs me and cries. I held her tight, the relief I felt of finally seeing Lynette again was such a weight off my shoulders. The first step of getting my life back in order was finally taken.
As Lynette sat in my room, she asked a lot of questions about what I had been through. I had answers for some and nothing for other things asked. Lynette was really warming up to my new appearance and she kept tapping my nose. Her affectionate ways haven't changed at all. I smile at her and strokes my muzzle. "Russell, I really could get used to this, you're like a plushie!" She says with a giggle.
Myself and Lynette were in the doc's office one last time. I had my bags packed, I had a whole packet on how to keep my diet healthy, but he was still leery about the public reacting to me.
"Russell, I've hired a few private detectives and some private security guards to keep an eye where you live. I have this bad feeling of backlash from the public about you. I recommend you stay at home as I am planning to properly introduce you to the world,"
I feel my ears perk up, "Wait, introduce me to the world?" I asked. The doc nods slowly, "Yes. You are one of a kind, your existence is living proof that we can create new life by merging what exists already. I'm giving it about a month until I do so. Until then, just relax and lay low. To make sure you're fine, we're giving you some funds to make sure you don't have to worry about leaving home. Lynette, before you leave I want you to talk to my accountant about wiring you a small lump sum of this money,"
My introduction to the world? I didn't know what to think, but it was a month away. I just wanted to go home and just return to some sense of normality already.
Lynette leaves the account's office, I have my bags already and I had my hood up on my sweatshirt. I didn't want to stand out too much until then. As we walk towards Lynette's car, we see two black sedans parked out front. One of the drivers called me over.
"You're Russell? Whoa, the guy wasn't kidding about you. Well, we're watching ya for the next month. Here's a number, it my cell. We'll follow you home and patrol the area around your residence to make sure nobody bothers ya, alright?"
I nod slowly, I'm just tired at this point. I walk over to Lynette's car and she pops the trunk. I toss my bags inside and get into the passenger seat. She gets in and starts the car, she reaches over to my hand and kisses my nose. "Russell, I don't care if you look like a fox. I'm happy to have you back in my life. It just wasn't the same," she says.
She backs out of the parking spot and I lean my head against the passenger window. As I doze off, the sounds of the road and hum of the engine strangely soothe me to sleep.
It's nice being out in the world again.
