While the farmer was out to pick up the cat he was given by his friend, the mice were already plotting. Having a predator run around the farm freely was the last thing they wanted and so it was decided that they had to be prepared to drive away or kill the feline menace. A discussion was held in order to find the best approach to reach the goal. One side argued that doing their best to evade the cat while sneakily going about their lives would be good. That could either result in the farmer being disappointed by the feline’s inability to help him which could then lead to him getting rid of the cat, or the mice would still increase in numbers so they would be able to overwhelm the cat at some point. The argument was ultimately won by those who made a more aggressive proposition. Since they were already quite numerous and the cat still young, small and inexperienced, the second faction reasoned that it was paramount to strike as early as possible in order to beat their enemy quickly so they would not have to give up on their luxurious lifestyle.
By the time the mice had settled the particularities of operation kitten-slayer, the farmer was already coming back holding in his hand the cage which, hopefully, contained the solution to his rodent problem. If that kitten was anything near as gluttonous and capable as its parents, or so his buddy had told him, it would be stuffed full with mice in no time, making life at the farm bearable once again.
