I'm working with blender mostly It lacks some of the features of Maya, but its free.
I haven't really played with the AO settings much its at default, I may have to give that a poke.
I've been actually avoiding AO in general as in many cases i see people Bake in an AO to their model and then put it in a pose where those areas really should not be dark, A bit of a pet peeve of mine. I see it in video games all the time older ones mostly mind you.
